Severe gusts are the main threat, though some instances of severe hail and perhaps a tornado also may occur. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch issuance will be needed within the hour. DISCUSSION...Multicells and discrete supercells are moving across western SD/ND and are approaching the eastern bounds of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 475 and Tornado Watch 476. Meanwhile, a mature MCS continues to rapidly propagate eastward into ND from MT, and is poised to reach central ND in the next few hours. As these storms merge and approach central SD/ND, severe gusts will become likely as the storms move into a strongly unstable airmass (characterized by up to 3500 J/kg MLCAPE per 23Z mesoanalysis). Furthermore, the strengthening of the southerly LLJ (to 40+ kts), beneath increasing westerly 500 mb flow with the ejection of a mid-level vort max, will support effective bulk shear values well over 50 kts. Regional VADs and short-term RUC forecasts show enlarged and curved low-level hodographs with modest mid-level elongation. As such, any storms that remain surface based as they move into the central Dakotas should be accompanied by a severe threat. The eastward moving MCS should produce at least some severe wind, which is expected to be the predominant severe hazard. However, embedded mesovortices may be accompanied by an isolated tornado threat. Severe wind gusts (a few of which could reach 75-90 mph) are the main threat, though isolated instances of hail or even a tornado remain possible. DISCUSSION...Multicells and transient supercells are merging into a singular MCS across portions of southeastern Montana. These storms have been traversing a mixed boundary layer (characterized by 9.5 C/km 0-3 km lapse rates per 21Z mesoanalysis), with a history of producing multiple severe gusts. Preceding the upscale growing MCS is a warm sector that moistens with eastward extent, with 60s F dewpoints beneath 7.5 C/km mid-level lapse rates contributing to 2000-3000 J/kg MLCAPE near the MT/ND border. Given widespread 50+ kt effective bulk shear, the MCS should at least maintain intensity through the evening. However, deep-layer shear vectors become more perpendicular to MCS orientation with eastward extent, which may promote further organization into a bow-echo MCS with increased severe gust potential. A few 75-90 mph gusts may occur near the apex of any bow echo that can form, with large hail possible with any stronger storm cores. DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows storms gradually increasing in coverage from northeastern New Mexico and adjacent southeastern Colorado, to near of KTQX (Scott City, KS). The storms are occurring in a hot/deeply mixed boundary layer, where modest CAPE above the LCL is supporting a few stronger updrafts. The development appears to be occurring in part due to response of the environment to a very subtle/mid-level disturbance moving eastward across southern Colorado at this time. DISCUSSION...Cumulus is deepening along an effective warm front extending east-southeastward from eastern MT into western ND, and isolated convective initiation is underway over Wibaux County MT. Regional VWP shows ample low-level hodograph curvature associated with backed surface winds beneath a plume of strong low-level warm-air advection. Additionally, diurnal heating along the boundary has yielded moderate surface-based instability.
