Drought led many New Mexico ranchers to sell livestock as it was too expensive to feed them. Even after an active monsoon season, roughly two-thirds of the state remained in moderate to extreme drought. Drought conditions decrease animal growth, diminish forage opportunities for livestock, increase the cost of production and decrease calf prices, according to a report from the New Mexico State University Department of Animal and Range Sciences.

There were 41,000 fewer acres of cotton planted in California in 2021, as reported by the USDA in its Planted Acres report in late June. Drought and water concerns likely contributed to the reduction, which followed a 20,000 acre reduction in 2020.

PRESCRIBED FIRE Promoting fire-adapted communities and resilient landscapesThe Payette National Forest will be conducting multiple prescribed fires this fall. Depending on weather conditions burns could take place anytime from late September to early November. These prescribed fires reduce surface fuels, increase height of the canopy, reduce small tree densities, and promote fire resilient trees, thereby improving our ability to protect communities from wildfire. Additionally, these fires improve wildlife habitat, promote long-term ecosystem integrity and sustainability by reducing the risk of high-severity wildland fire. Prescribed fire is an important component of natural resource management and part of the comprehensive fire management program on the Payette National Forest. The New Meadows Ranger District plans to burn approximately 3,000 acres in Boulder Creek drainage (13 miles northwest of New Meadows); 150 acres of hand piles in the Weiser River canyon area. (2 miles south...

SPC 1300Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0710 AM CDT Mon Oct 04 2021
Valid 041300Z - 051200Z
...NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM AREAS FORECAST...
...SUMMARY...
Severe thunderstorms are not expected today through tonight.
...Central Gulf Coast to the Southern Appalachians...
A shortwave impulse over eastern OK will deepen slightly as it
settles into the Lower MS Valley tonight. A weak frontal zone will
slowly slide southward across parts of the TN Valley to coastal LA
through the period. A richly moist air mass will persist ahead of
this front across the central Gulf Coast and parts of the Deep
South. As pockets of modest boundary-layer heating occur, scattered
thunderstorms are anticipated towards midday through the afternoon.
Poor mid-level lapse rates coupled with weak low-level flow beneath
modest 500-mb west-southwesterlies should curtail an organized
severe threat. Some guidance suggest that a subtle increase in
low-level flow may occur across the western FL Panhandle and coastal
AL vicinity overnight as weak mid-level height falls overspread the
region ahead of the Lower MS Valley low. Regenerative late-period
convection may occur within this regime, near and just off the
coast. Any damaging wind/brief tornado potential appears negligible
enough to mitigate a delineation this outlook cycle.

The most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture report indicated that drought significantly lowered wheat, barley and bean production. Durum wheat yields will likely be down 50% from 2020, while production of other spring wheats were predicted to be 41% lower. Barley yields were more than 33% lower. Dry, edible beans, including black-eyed peas, were also substantially lower, due to drought.
Fewer acres were planted. This could mean higher prices on some products.
Consumers can expect to pay more for flour, pasta, beer, animal feed and more.
