MD 0552 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 169... FOR SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO INTO WESTERN KANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0552 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0813 PM CDT Thu Apr 24 2025 Areas affected...Southeastern Colorado into Western Kansas Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 169... Valid 250113Z - 250245Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 169 continues. SUMMARY...The severe weather threat across WW 169 continues into the evening, with large hail and damaging winds the primary hazards. Some downstream watch extensions may be necessary as a linear convective segment matures moving into western Kansas. DISCUSSION...The severe weather threat for WW 169 continues this evening, particularly across northern portions of the watch area in southeastern Colorado, as thunderstorm clusters have begun to loosely organize into a linear convective segment. While the overall coverage of severe storms has been low thus far, SPC surface mesoanalysis data show MUCAPE increasing with eastward extent, coupled with deep-layer bulk shear of 40-45 kts. This should support continued organization of the linear convective complex as it moves into western Kansas, shifting gradually from a hail/wind threat to a primarily damaging wind threat later into the evening. ..Halbert.. 04/25/2025 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... WW 167 TORNADO OK TX 242035Z - 250400Z
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Tornado Watch Number 167 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 335 PM CDT Thu Apr 24 2025 The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a * Tornado Watch for portions of Oklahoma Panhandle Texas Panhandle and South Plains * Effective this Thursday afternoon and evening from 335 PM until 1100 PM CDT. * Primary threats include... A couple tornadoes possible Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 4 inches in diameter likely Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible SUMMARY...Widely scattered thunderstorms are forecast to rapidly develop this afternoon into the early evening. Environmental shear and buoyancy combinations strongly favor intense, discrete supercells. Large to giant hail will be probable with any supercell. The tornado risk will likely focus for a few hours during the early evening near a residual outflow boundary draped over parts of the Watch area. The tornado watch area is approximately along and 60 statute miles east and west of a line from 30 miles northeast of Guymon OK to 60 miles southeast of Lubbock TX. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update (WOUS64 KWNS WOU7). PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... MD 0551 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 167... FOR PARTS OF THE TX SOUTH PLAINS
Mesoscale Discussion 0551 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0744 PM CDT Thu Apr 24 2025 Areas affected...Parts of the TX South Plains Concerning...Tornado Watch 167... Valid 250044Z - 250215Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 167 continues. SUMMARY...A localized threat of potentially strong tornadoes has evolved to the east/northeast of Lubbock, with very large to giant hail also possible. DISCUSSION...An intense supercell over Floyd and Motley Counties in Texas has propagated southeastward into an increasingly moist boundary layer, accompanied by a notable increase in low-level mesocyclone strength. Rotational velocity and environmental characteristics suggest a strong tornado may have occurred within the last 15-30 minutes. The presence of strong buoyancy (with MLCAPE greater than 3000 J/kg per the modified 00Z AMA sounding), favorable deep-layer shear, and enlarging low-level hodographs suggest a localized threat for strong tornadoes may continue with this cell, and also potentially with an intense supercell currently over Crosby County. Greater than 4 inch hail has also been reported in Floyd County, and a threat for very large to giant hail will likely persist for as long as the ongoing supercells remain semi-discrete this evening. ..Dean.. 04/25/2025 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0550 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 170... FOR NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA INTO FAR SOUTHERN KANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0550 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0707 PM CDT Thu Apr 24 2025 Areas affected...Northwest Oklahoma into far southern Kansas Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 170... Valid 250007Z - 250130Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 170 continues. SUMMARY...The severe weather threat for all hazards (hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two) continues across WW 170, particularly where supercells have developed and begun to move east-southeast across portions of northern Oklahoma. This threat will continue into the early evening hours. DISCUSSION...Supercells along the Kansas/Oklahoma border have taken on an east-southeast storm motion as mid and low-level mesocyclones have matured. These storms are capable of all hazards, having already produced 2.5" hail and a tornado. VAD wind profiles from KDDC and KVNX don't show an overall abundance of storm-relative helicity, but do indicate some curvature of the hodograph in the lowest levels. Additionally, current surface mesoanalysis indicates these storms exist within an area of locally enhanced surface vorticity. With the onset of the nocturnal low-level jet, in addition to the observed southeastward storm motion, SRH is expected to increase into the early evening and support a continued threat for all hazards, including tornadoes. The greatest short-term threat for continued tornado development will be with the southeastern-most storm, with unimpeded inflow and a favorable storm motion vector. The tornado threat will diminish into the evening hours as the nocturnal boundary layer stabilizes, but all supercells will be capable of 2.0+" hail and 65-85 MPH wind gusts. ..Halbert.. 04/25/2025 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... Mesoscale Discussion 0549 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0656 PM CDT Thu Apr 24 2025 Areas affected...TX Permian Basin/Trans-Pecos region Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 168... Valid 242356Z - 250130Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 168 continues. SUMMARY...Supercells with large to very large hail remain possible this evening. DISCUSSION...Scattered strong to severe storms are ongoing at 2345 UTC across the TX Permian Basin vicinity. Despite generally modest large-scale forcing, strong buoyancy (with MLCAPE of 2000-3000 J/kg) and moderate deep-layer shear will continue to support splitting supercells within the weakly capped environment through early evening. Large to very large hail will likely be the primary hazard, especially with any persistent left-movers, while strong to locally severe outflow winds will also be possible in the vicinity of the strongest cells. Increasing MLCINH should result in a gradual decrease in the severe threat later this evening. ..Dean.. 04/24/2025 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...SJT...MAF...
