Drought emergency declared in Utah

3 years 1 month ago
Gov. Spencer Cox on April 21 issued a State of Emergency due to “dire drought conditions” affecting Utah. The announcement activated the Drought Response Committee and increased monitoring and reporting efforts. The snowpack was 25% below normal, and 95% of the state’s water supply comes from snowpack. As of April 21, nineteen of Utah’s largest 45 reservoirs were below 55% of available capacity, with overall statewide storage at just 59%. This time last year, the reservoirs were near 67% of capacity. ABC4 (Salt Lake City, Utah), April 21, 2022

Water contamination, dry conditions led to urgent call for water conservation on Oahu, Hawaii

3 years 1 month ago
Water consumption on Oahu was up slightly, compared to the previous year, amid increased concern about drought brush fires and possible mandatory water rationing at the start of what is expected to be a dry summer. Honolulu Star-Advertiser (Hawaii), June 7, 2022 The Honolulu Board of Water Supply called for urgent voluntary water conservation in urban Honolulu and Aiea-Halawa areas as three wells remained shut down as fuel leaking from the Navy’s fuel tanks were contaminating the water supply. The combined closure of the three wells and the dry weather, were increasing water demand. There was concern that demand might exceed supply this summer. Cienegita Fire (Wildfire)

3 years 1 month ago
The Cienegita fire started on 6/3/2022, located approximately four miles northwest of the Village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation. The fire was determined to be caused by several dry lightning strikes that hit the area that afternoon. The fire reached 37 acres the following day while both ground and aerial resources directly attacked the fire in tandem and Pecos Type 3 incident management team was assigned to the fire. Crews and aerial resources made excellent progress the following days bringing the fire’s total containment to 95% by 6/7/22. The afternoon of 6/8/22, command of the fire was handed back to the local agency.Over the next few days, the Smokey Bear Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) and aerial resources will remain on the scene to monitor the fire area and ensure there are no longer hotspots.    Unless there are significant new developments, this page will no longer be regularly

SPC Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook
Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1038 AM CDT Thu Jun 09 2022 Valid 091700Z - 101200Z Isolated dry thunderstorm highlights have been expanded north-northwest into west-central Colorado as confidence has increased in a couple of thunderstorms developing in this region later this afternoon, where fuels are also critically dry. Otherwise, the previous forecast (see below) remains on track, with no changes or additions made. ..Squitieri.. 06/09/2022 .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 0150 AM CDT Thu Jun 09 2022/ ...Synopsis... Over parts of the Southwest and southern/central Rockies, sufficient midlevel moisture combined with strong diurnal heating over the higher terrain will support isolated to widely scattered high-based thunderstorm development during the afternoon. Given a hot/deeply-mixed boundary layer (widespread 10-15 percent RH) and critically dry fuels, isolated lightning-induced ignitions will be possible during the initial stages of development over parts of south-central CO, NM, and southeast AZ. In addition, gusty/erratic outflow winds could accompany the stronger storms. Elsewhere, locally enhanced fire-weather conditions will be possible over parts of the southern Great Basin (particularly over southern and eastern UT), where 10-15 percent RH and breezy surface winds are expected. However, the localized nature of the threat precludes highlights at this time. ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov/fire for graphic product... Read more

SPC Jun 9, 2022 1300 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook

SPC 1300Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook CORR 1 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0835 AM CDT Thu Jun 09 2022 Valid 091300Z - 101200Z ...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT OVER PARTS OF THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS... CORRECTED OUTLOOK GRAPHICS ISSUE ...SUMMARY... Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of large hail and potentially intense damaging gusts will be possible this afternoon into tonight across portions of the central and southern Plains. ...NE/KS/MO/OK... Morning water vapor imagery shows an upper trough and associated mid level speed max rotating across parts of MT/WY. This feature will track eastward into NE this afternoon, where dewpoints near 60F will yield a corridor of MLCAPE of 2000+ J/kg. Mid-level capping should limit strong convection until late afternoon, when at least isolated thunderstorm development is expected across parts of western/southern NE and northern KS. Large hail will likely be the main threat from the initial storms. This activity will build southward down the instability gradient over KS through the evening and into northeast OK overnight while growing upscale, with the potential for one or more bowing complexes capable of damaging winds. Portions of this area may need an upgrade to ENH in later outlooks as the corridor of greatest risk becomes more apparent. ...CO/NM/TX/OK... Scattered high-based afternoon thunderstorms are expected to form over/along the mountains of southeastern CO and northeast WY. This is beneath the southern fringe of stronger west-northwesterly flow aloft. Overnight CAM solutions suggest that this activity will slowly intensify and organize through the early evening as it spreads into the TX Panhandle, with an increasing risk of damaging winds and hail. Given the reservoir of rich low-level moisture and strong CAPE that will be present over OK, it is likely that these storms will persist through the night and track east-southeastward across portions of OK and north TX. Mid-level winds are only marginally strong, lessening the confidence of a long-lived severe event. However, the potential exists for an upgrade to ENH for this MCS as well. ...Gulf Coast into Southeast States... Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold front from LA into the Carolinas. Weak winds aloft will limit convective organization, but a few cells in this area will be capable of locally damaging wind gusts during the late afternoon and early evening. ..Hart.. 06/09/2022 Read more

Largest wildfire in New Mexico history

3 years 1 month ago
The largest fire in New Mexico, the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon fire, has burned nearly 500 square miles in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and destroyed several hundred homes. Residents are understandably angry and critical, given the U.S. Forest Service’s role in sparking the fire which began from an escaped prescribed burn. Five large fires continue to burn in New Mexico. Associated Press News (New York), June 7, 2022 The Hermits Peak Calf Canyon fire in northern New Mexico has become the largest in the state’s history. The wind-driven blaze has burned for 40 days, incinerated hundreds of homes and other properties and blackened 298,060 acres. The 45-mile-long fire forced more evacuations on May 15. The previous largest fire was the Whitewater Baldy fire in 2012. Reuters (New York), May 16, 2022
