MD 2172 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 696... FOR EASTERN OK
Mesoscale Discussion 2172 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0831 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2024 Areas affected...eastern OK Concerning...Tornado Watch 696... Valid 310131Z - 310230Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 696 continues. SUMMARY...A sustained supercell or two is possible as storms over southeast Oklahoma potentially deepen while moving north-northeast. An extension of WW 696 or a new WW may be needed. DISCUSSION...Deepening warm-sector convection has increased across southeast OK into far north TX. Environment here is conditionally favorable for sustained supercell development with mid to upper 60s surface dew points and effective SRH around 250-350 m2/s2. Both HRRR and WoFS runs have largely been devoid of development here, but the RRFS has suggested some potential for a supercell or two to become sustained as activity moves north-northeast across eastern OK. With low-level forcing for ascent stronger to the north and west, it is uncertain whether these cells will truly deepen and sustain supercell structures. ..Grams/Hart.. 10/31/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Tornado Watch Number 694 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 205 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2024 The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a * Tornado Watch for portions of South-Central Kansas Western into Central/North-Central Oklahoma * Effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 205 PM until 900 PM CDT. * Primary threats include... A few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible Scattered damaging winds likely with isolated significant gusts to 75 mph possible Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2.5 inches in diameter possible SUMMARY...Developing supercells will pose a threat for large to very large hail initially (up to 1.5-2.5 inches in diameter). Later this afternoon into the evening, the threat for a few tornadoes will increase. A strong tornado or two appears possible, especially early this evening. Scattered severe/damaging winds will also become a concern later this evening as thunderstorms eventually form into a line. MD 2171 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 695... FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST KANSAS AND WEST-CENTRAL MISSOURI
Mesoscale Discussion 2171 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0736 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2024 Areas affected...portions of northeast Kansas and west-central Missouri Concerning...Tornado Watch 695... Valid 310036Z - 310130Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 695 continues. SUMMARY...A bowing segment embedded within the QLCS has shown increased organization over the last 30 minutes. The risk for tornadoes and damaging winds may be increasing. DISCUSSION...Regional radar imagery shows a north-south oriented line segment west of the KC metro has improved in organization rapidly over the last 30 minutes. A more favorable updraft/downdraft orientation appears to have developed with surging outflow. Though recent scans suggests outflow may have outrun it temporarily. While there remains some uncertainty, large low-level streamwise vorticity is evident on the EAX VAD with 180-200 m2/s2 of 0-500 m SRH. The strong low-level shear may support an enhanced tornado or strong damaging wind risk with the more favorably orientated and stronger line segment over the next hour as it moves through the KC Metro. While thermodynamics weaken considerably to the east, strong forcing for ascent along the front should allow for a continued severe risk farther east this evening. ..Lyons.. 10/31/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2170 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 694...696... FOR NORTH-CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST OK
Mesoscale Discussion 2170 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0729 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2024 Areas affected...north-central and northeast OK Concerning...Tornado Watch 694...696... Valid 310029Z - 310130Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 694, 696 continues. SUMMARY...Severe wind and isolated hail threats should persist for the next several hours. The tornado threat may increase during the next few hours, ahead of the more intense linear segment over north-central Oklahoma. DISCUSSION...IR cloud tops and MRMS MESH signatures suggest the deepest core of the evening was centered on Logan/Noble counties border area within the extensive linear band. Surface dew points ahead of this part of the band are in the mid 60s (64-65 F), with this air mass well sampled by the 00Z OUN sounding. Despite weak 700-500 mb lapse rates around 6 C/km, MLCAPE of 1500 J/kg exists with a moderately enlarged, sickle-shaped hodograph. The low-level jet in the Twin Lakes VWP has increased during the past hour. It is plausible that a sustained swath of severe wind damage, along with low-level mesocyclones capable of a couple tornadoes may evolve from this portion of the line. This may eventually impact parts of the greater Tulsa metro area by late evening. ..Grams/Hart.. 10/31/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...TSA...OUN... SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0755 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2024 Valid 310100Z - 311200Z ...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA INTO WESTERN MISSOURI... ...SUMMARY... Severe storms capable of severe winds and a few tornadoes remain possible in a zone from central into northeast Oklahoma and into western Missouri. A few destructive wind gusts can be anticipated. ...Discussion... Storms continue to evolve along a cold front this evening, most notably from north-central OK into southeast KS and into northwest MO. Shear remains strong across the entire region, with low-level shear supportive of rotation maximized beneath the low-level jet from eastern OK into MO. The 00Z OUN sounding shows a supercell hodograph especially for storms moving rightward off the front/boundary. Given the upper trough position, large-scale ascent appears to be most favorable through late evening from northeast OK into western MO, while farther south, ascent will be more heavily dependent on the surface cold front, especially into northern TX tonight. Damaging winds appear to be the most likely severe mode given storms oriented/congealed along the boundary. However, embedded/QLCS type tornadoes will be possible given such favorable low-level shear. Overall instability is not particularly strong due to modest midlevel lapse rates, but is clearly sufficient given other favorable factors. For more information see mesoscale discussions 2169, 2170, and 2171. ..Jewell.. 10/31/2024 Read more
