MD 1085 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 354... FOR THE PERMIAN BASIN AND TRANS-PECOS
Mesoscale Discussion 1085 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0638 PM CDT Thu May 30 2024 Areas affected...The Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos Concerning...Tornado Watch 354... Valid 302338Z - 310115Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 354 continues. SUMMARY...A tornado, very large hail, and severe damaging wind threat continues across the tornado watch. DISCUSSION...Two confirmed tornadoes were recently reported very close to MAF and briefly Denver City, in addition to very large hail. The supercell near MAF continues to interact with the same outflow boundary, and remains in a favorable environment for additional tornadogensis cycles. The KMAF VAD indicated 0-1 km SRH around 250-350 m2/s2 when the tornado occurred, and recent mesoanalysis suggests a broad area within southeasterly surface flow just behind the modified outflow boundary of 150-200 m2/s2 0-1 km SRH. In addition, steep mid-level lapse rates are contributing large CAPE within the hail growth zone as depicted in local RAP soundings. Increasing low-level shear and moisture advection will continue through the evening hours as a LLJ slowly intensifies. A discrete storm mode is expected to continue (deep layer effective shear 55-60 kt normal to forcing) before mergers occur late this evening. ..Barnes.. 05/30/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 1084 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR THE HIGH PLAINS OF SOUTHEAST COLORADO AND SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 1084 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0541 PM CDT Thu May 30 2024 Areas affected...The High Plains of southeast Colorado and southwestern Kansas Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 302241Z - 302345Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...A few strong to severe storms, including one or two transient supercells, may develop over the next 1-2 hours across portions of southeast CO and southwest KS. Large hail near 1.25-2.00" in diameter, wind gusts up to 65 mph, and a landspout or two will be possible. DISCUSSION...A couple of relatively robust thunderstorms have developed this afternoon in the lee of the Rockies near PUB, and along an outflow boundary and surface low intersection across far southwest KS. Additional towering CU are also beginning to develop east of PUB. Daytime heating and cooler mid-level temperatures aloft/steep mid-level lapse, combined with surface dewpoints in the upper 50s to low 60s, have contributed to moderate MLCAPE around 1500-2500 J/kg. Although weaker mid to upper-level flow is only yielding around 25-30 kt of deep layer effective shear, a slow increase is anticipated through this evening. This environment could support transient supercells with a threat of large hail and localized severe wind gusts. In addition, enhanced surface vorticity combined with modest low-level cape may present an opportunity for a landspout tornado or two. However, limited thunderstorm coverage may preclude the need for a WW at this time. ..Barnes/Hart.. 05/30/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... Valid 302203Z - 302330Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 353 continues. SUMMARY...Severe threat will spread across southern and eastern portions of ww353 over the next several hours. DISCUSSION...Leading edge of long-lived MCS has progressed across north-central TX and now arcs from the northeast corner of the watch into McLennan County in central TX. MD 1082 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR ARKLATEX REGION
Mesoscale Discussion 1082 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0439 PM CDT Thu May 30 2024 Areas affected...Arklatex Region Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 302139Z - 302315Z Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent SUMMARY...Convection will spread across the Arklatex region over the next few hours. Gusty winds along with marginally severe hail are expected. Some consideration is being given to a new watch immediately downstream of ww0353. DISCUSSION...Remnants of pre-dawn MCS that developed over the southern High Plains have propagated downstream into the Arklatex region. Diurnal heating and weak inhibition have contributed to renewed development along the leading edge of this long-lived MCS. Surface temperatures have warmed into the lower 80s ahead of this activity across northern LA/southern AR which is contributing to MLCAPE on the order of 1500-2000 J/kg within a modestly sheared environment. Additionally, latest water-vapor imagery/model guidance suggest a weak short-wave trough is associated with this convection which should encourage further advancement downstream into an air mass that will support robust updrafts. Current thinking is marginally severe hail is possible along with gusty winds. Some consideration is being given to a new watch immediately downstream of ww0353. ..Darrow/Hart.. 05/30/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...SHV...
