URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 501 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1240 PM MDT Wed Jul 3 2024 The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a * Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of Northeast Colorado The Nebraska Panhandle into Central Nebraska * Effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 1240 PM until 700 PM MDT. * Primary threats include... Scattered damaging winds likely with isolated significant gusts to 75 mph possible Scattered large hail likely with isolated very large hail events to 3 inches in diameter possible A tornado or two possible SUMMARY...Supercell thunderstorms will initially pose a threat for large hail this afternoon. Some of the hail may be very large, with isolated hailstones up to 2-3 inches in diameter. Otherwise, severe/damaging winds around 60-75 mph should become an increasing concern late this afternoon and evening as thunderstorms potentially form into a small bowing cluster. A tornado or two also appears possible, mainly across north-central Nebraska. The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 85 statute miles east and west of a line from 20 miles west northwest of Valentine NE to 15 miles west southwest of Imperial NE. MD 1525 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 501...502... FOR EAST-CENTRAL CO INTO FAR NORTHWEST KS
Mesoscale Discussion 1525 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0528 PM CDT Wed Jul 03 2024 Areas affected...east-central CO into far northwest KS Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 501...502... Valid 032228Z - 032330Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 501, 502 continues. SUMMARY...The greatest risk for significant severe hail between 2-2.5 inches is anticipated through about 7 PM MDT over east-central Colorado near the I-70 corridor. An increase in severe wind potential is expected towards the northwest Kansas border. DISCUSSION...A pair of slow-moving supercells between Denver and Limon will have the greatest potential to produce large hail beyond 2 inches over the next 2-3 hours. These storms will move towards the peak buoyancy plume characterized by MLCAPE of 1500-2000 J/kg along the CO/KS border area. With favorable westerly speed shear above 2 km AGL per the FTG/PUX VWP data, in conjunction with a modest increase in low-level south-southeasterly flow in the next few hours, intensification of these supercells is plausible. This will also include a risk for increasing severe wind gusts, as persistently indicated by recent WoFS guidance. ..Grams.. 07/03/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 1524 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 501... FOR PARTS OF NE...FAR NORTHEAST CO...FAR SOUTHEAST SD
Mesoscale Discussion 1524 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0432 PM CDT Wed Jul 03 2024 Areas affected...parts of NE...far northeast CO...far southeast SD Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 501... Valid 032132Z - 032300Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 501 continues. SUMMARY...A mixed severe hail/wind threat may transition to a predominant strong to severe wind threat as storms further congeal from far northeast Colorado into north-central Nebraska. A downstream watch issuance may be needed as storms approach the east edge of WW 501. DISCUSSION...Initial supercells that produced large hail have largely congealed, especially with southwest extent across parts of north-central to southwest NE. The northern portion of this activity, embedded within slightly stronger mid-level flow will probably exit WW 501 first across parts of northeast NE into far southeast SD. While this activity will progressively move away from the peak buoyancy plume centered on the CO/KS border area, presence of a quasi-stationary front may aid in sustaining strong to isolated severe storms. Farther southwest, severe wind gust potential may increase as clusters further consolidate near the CO/KS/NE border area. These will probably merge with an agitated cu field over southwest NE and yield an increasing wind threat later into south-central NE. ..Grams/Hart.. 07/03/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 1523 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR EASTERN COLORADO INTO WESTERN KANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 1523 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0357 PM CDT Wed Jul 03 2024 Areas affected...eastern Colorado into western Kansas Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 032057Z - 032300Z Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent SUMMARY...Thunderstorms capable of large hail and damaging wind to continue through the evening. DISCUSSION...Thunderstorms have developed across eastern Colorado this afternoon along a lee trough located in the central high Plains, with additional development expected through the rest of the afternoon and evening. Ahead of this activity, portions of eastern Colorado into western Kansas have destabilized with daytime heating. MLCAPE around 1000-2000 J/kg is observed in mesoanalysis amid deep layer shear of 40-50 kts. Storm mode will initially favor supercells with potential for large hail, damaging wind, and perhaps a tornado. Through the evening, cells may attempt to merge along outflow with risk of damaging wind increasing. A watch may be needed in the next couple of hours. ..Thornton/Gleason.. 07/03/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...GID...DDC...GLD...PUB...BOU... MD 1522 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR FAR EASTERN WYOMING INTO WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
Mesoscale Discussion 1522 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0240 PM CDT Wed Jul 03 2024 Areas affected...far eastern Wyoming into western South Dakota Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 031940Z - 032145Z Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent SUMMARY...Thunderstorm development will continue into the evening with potential for damaging wind and large hail. DISCUSSION...Thunderstorm activity has been ongoing across portions of eastern Wyoming into western South Dakota this afternoon. A recent 18z sounding from UNR shows meager instability with MLCAPE < 250 J/kg and MUCAPE around 500 J/kg. Low-level moisture is also meager, with dew points generally in the mid 40s to 50s. Despite meager moisture, ample deep layer shear around 40-45 kts remains in place across eastern Wyoming into western South Dakota. Instability does increase near the Nebraska border south of the surface boundary. In this region, transient elevated supercells have been ongoing. Confidence in a sustained severe threat remains uncertain, given generally poor thermodynamics. This area will be monitored for trends and potential for watch issuance should additional storms intensify. ..Thornton/Gleason.. 07/03/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
