MD 0963 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 308... FOR FAR NORTH-CENTRAL TX
Mesoscale Discussion 0963 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1016 PM CDT Sat May 25 2024 Areas affected...Far North-Central TX Concerning...Tornado Watch 308... Valid 260316Z - 260415Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 308 continues. SUMMARY...An intense supercell capable of producing a strong tornado is expected to continue for at least the next hour over far north-central Texas. DISCUSSION...Recent radar imagery has shown an notable increase in intensity of the supercell over Montague and Cooke County in far north-central Texas. Echo tops now over 60 kft, with a very strong low-level circulation observed as well. Recent mesoanalysis estimates that effective helicity is over 800 m2/s2 and effective shear is over 70 kt near this supercell. This intense shear coupled with very strong buoyancy (i.e. 4500 J/kg) is resulting in STP values from 16 to 18. Given the supercellular mode, a strong tornado is possible within this environment. An extension in time for Tornado Watch 308 may be needed. ..Mosier.. 05/26/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...FWD...OUN... MD 0961 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 310... FOR NORTHWEST KANSAS INTO SOUTHERN NEBRASKA
Mesoscale Discussion 0961 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0822 PM CDT Sat May 25 2024 Areas affected...Northwest Kansas into southern Nebraska Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 310... Valid 260122Z - 260315Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 310 continues. SUMMARY...The threat for severe hail and wind continues across portions of northwest Kansas into southern Nebraska. Thunderstorm coverage and intensity may increase in the next couple of hours based on recent observed trends and latest numerical guidance. DISCUSSION...Recent GOES water-vapor and visible imagery continue to show signs of persistent, broadscale ascent within the left-exit region of the primary mid-level jet that is nosing into western/central OK. This persistent ascent has resulted in scattered thunderstorm development along a cold front across southwest NE/northwest KS over the past hour. IR imagery and MRMS data have shown periodic intensification of this activity, and while buoyancy continues to slowly increase amid northward moisture return, ongoing thunderstorms across north-central KS may limit addition moisture return and modulate further destabilization. The expectation for the next couple of hours is for continued periodic intensification of this activity with additional development along the front possible. Thunderstorm clusters should propagate to the east/northeast over the next few hours with an attendant risk of large hail and severe winds. This idea is supported by recent HRRR solutions and derived hazard probability forecasts, which show hail and wind potential increasing downstream through at least 03 UTC. ..Moore.. 05/26/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0960 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 308... FOR SOUTH-CENTRAL/SOUTHEAST KS...NORTH-CENTRAL/NORTHEAST OK
Mesoscale Discussion 0960 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0819 PM CDT Sat May 25 2024 Areas affected...South-Central/Southeast KS...North-Central/Northeast OK Concerning...Tornado Watch 308... Valid 260119Z - 260245Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 308 continues. SUMMARY...Threat for all severe hazards will persist for the next several hours into more of southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma, and eventually into portions of southwest Missouri and far northwest Arkansas. A downstream watch is likely. DISCUSSION...Complex convective evolution is in process across south-central KS and north-central OK as numerous left-splits and associated outflow interacts with a previously semi-discrete supercell. New development is also occurring along outflow from northeast Major County through southern Garfield County and advecting into the region, adding to the storm interactions and overall complexity of the mesoscale environment. Some forward propagation has been noted within the southernmost portion of the area (i.e. Noble County), which seemingly suggests some upscale growth could be occurring. However, a similar surge has not been noted farther north thus far, with larger-scale organization still lacking. Strong buoyancy and robust deep-layer shear remain in place, suggesting that some reorganization is possible over time, with the severe threat extending into southeast KS and northwest OK, and eventually into adjacent portions of southwest MO and far northwest AR. ..Mosier/Smith.. 05/26/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0959 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 308...309... FOR NORTHERN KANSAS INTO FAR SOUTHERN NEBRASKA
Mesoscale Discussion 0959 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0728 PM CDT Sat May 25 2024 Areas affected...Northern Kansas into far southern Nebraska Concerning...Tornado Watch 308...309... Valid 260028Z - 260230Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 308, 309 continues. SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across northern portions of WW 309, specifically across parts of north-central Kansas into far south-central Nebraska. DISCUSSION...Over the past hour, a pair of supercells meandering across north-central KS have produced hail up to 1.5 inches per recent storm reports. 00 UTC surface observations show that moisture continues to stream north/northwest with dewpoints in the low 60s reaching the KS/NE border. Consequently, buoyancy continues to increase downstream of the ongoing storms and is expected to improve further heading into the mid/late evening hours as the surface low shifts east/northeast. Recent water-vapor imagery suggests lift associated with the primary synoptic wave is currently overspreading the Plains, and additional bubbling cumulus noted in GOES 1-minute imagery to the west of the ongoing supercells. These trends suggest that re-organization/intensification of ongoing convection, as well as new convective development, remains possible in the coming hours. VWPs across KS and OK are beginning to show signs of the onset of the nocturnal low-level jet, which should further increase low-level helicity heading into the late evening. Consequently, the potential for all severe hazards should continue across WW 309, but should be focused in the short-term (next couple of hours) across north-central KS with the ongoing convection. ..Moore.. 05/26/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
