Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 mph possible Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible SUMMARY...Thunderstorms should continue developing over the Black Hills this afternoon. Large hail around 1-2 inches in diameter along with severe/damaging winds of 60-75 mph will be possible as this convection spreads eastward across parts of western and central South Dakota through this evening. Valid 160126Z - 160230Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 420 continues. SUMMARY...Risk of damaging winds increasing with eastward propagating line of severe storms across eastern Montana. DISCUSSION...A line of thunderstorms across eastern Montana has recently shown an increase in lightning activity, cooling cloud tops, and forward propagation speed. A recent report of a measured gust to 79 mph was observed near Fort Peck, MT. This line of storms will progress eastward into more favorable instability and steepening mid-level lapse rates. In addition, surface observations indicate better moisture with dew points in the mid 50s to 60s and temperatures in the low to mid 80s across far eastern Montana. SUMMARY...The tornado threat will continue through dusk, along with some potential for locally damaging wind and hail. DISCUSSION...A supercell cluster has evolved across northeast NE this evening, with multiple reports of confirmed tornadoes over the last 1-2 hours. The immediate downstream environment remains favorable for tornadic supercells, with MLCAPE in excess of 2000 J/kg, backed surface winds, and rather strong low-level shear/SRH still noted in VWPs from KFSD and KOAX. Any persistent supercells will continue to pose a tornado threat through dusk within this environment, along with some isolated hail potential. DISCUSSION...Supercells have developed across northern South Dakota and in western North Dakota this afternoon. Thunderstorm activity will increase this evening as a line of thunderstorms moves eastward out of Montana and additional thunderstorms develop along an eastward progressing cold front. Watch issuance is likely. DISCUSSION...A storm cluster is gradually increasing in size across northeast KS into southeast NE, as the northern portion of a smaller cluster that developed earlier over central KS begins to merge with ongoing storms across southeast NE. Moderate downstream buoyancy and marginally sufficient deep-layer shear will continue to support organized convection through the evening, and the ongoing storm cluster is expected to move into parts of northwest MO and southwest/central IA with time. With a linear mode already established, damaging winds may be the most likely hazard as storms progress east-northeastward this evening. However, rather strong low-level shear/SRH (as noted on regional VWPs) will also support potential for a tornado or two.
