Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Limitations While many wildfires cause minimal damage to the land and pose few threats to the land or people downstream, some fires result in damage that requires special efforts to reduce impacts afterwards. Loss of vegetation exposes soil to erosion; water run-off may increase and cause flooding, soil and rock may move downstream and damage property or fill reservoirs putting community water supplies and endangered species at-risk.The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program is designed to identify and manage potential risks to resources on National Forest System lands and reduce these threats through appropriate emergency measures to protect human life and safety, property, and critical natural or cultural resources. The fire received a half an inch of rain over the last 24 hours and remains in monitor and patrol status. One engine continues to patrol the fire line to ensure the line continues to hold and there is no interior smoke. The fire is still 80% contained at this time. Discovered on July 18, 2022, the lightning-caused Avalanche Fire is burning in steep and rugged terrain high above Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. Located in designed wilderness, about 1-mile north of Avalanche Peak. There is no threat to life, property, trails, or infrastructure at this time. However, smoke may be visible from certain spots along Kings Canyon Road (CA Hwy 180 on some maps) when looking south near Roads End or from Zumwalt Meadow. The fire is in a steep drainage inaccessible to firefighting personnel, Kings Canyon has cliffs that rise over a mile from the valley floor, firefighters are not on the ground considering the low growth potential and that there are no current threats to life or property. On July 18, 2022, a wildfire started in the 5200 block of Moore Lane near Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County line. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to assist at approximately 1:oo pm. The Southern Area Type-1 Blue Team assumed command of the fire on July 20, 2022 and is worked with multiple resources, including the Texas A&M Forest Service and numerous local fire departments, to contain the fire. The Moors Mountain Fire was reported on Saturday, July 16, near Moors Mountain in Gates of the Mountains Wilderness. The fire was caused by lightning. A total of 98-acres were involved and full containment was achieved on Sunday, July 24. Command of the fire was transferred back to the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, under Type 4 Incident Commander Mike Stanaway, on Monday, July 25. More than 80 personnel worked out of spike camps in the Gates of the Mountain Wilderness, for multiple operational periods, and were supported by helicopter operations to supply the camps and to provide fire suppression. Crews responded to the Escalera Fire at about 4pm on Sunday, July 24. The estimated size of the fire was 227 acres. The fire is currently 92% contained. The fire's cause was a hold over lightning strike. Dozers began constructing line around the fire's perimeter about 5pm with engine assistance. The Cat Fire began at about 7:15pm in Clay County, Texas. By 8:30pm, the fire had grown to about 60 acres. The fire threatened eight structures initially, however, these structures are not currently threatened. 29 fire personnel were initially assigned to the fire. Dozers are constructing line along the fire's perimeter. Engines are working to contain the fire east of a creek bed on the fire's west flank. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to a fire approximately 9 miles north of Huntsville, Texas in Walker County. The Nelson Creek Fire was reported on July 18, 2022, at 11:46 am.The fire is at 1,896 acres due to GPS mapping and 100% containment. No evacuations or road closures occurred on this fire. All state resources have been released and the fire has been turned back to the local unit. Aerial detection flights are scheduled in the region this week and will monitor for any potential restarts. The Mountain Fire was started by lightning on Wednesday July 20, 2022, near the top of Sitgreaves Mountain, on the Wiliams Ranger District. Firefighters were on scene on Thursday July 21, but found numerous hazards around the fire including lightning, steep slopes, numerous downed logs covering the ground in many areas, and numerous standing dead trees. After much conversation, a decision was made to hold off on aggressive attack of the fire at that time, but instead to wait and see what the monsoon storms in the area would do to the fire. Since that day, the fire has grown slowly, had several rain showers on it, and is consuming dead and downed fuel on the ground. Firefighters from the Kaibab National Forest are keeping a close eye on this fire every day, monitoring and mapping fire spread, and watching the weather which includes increased chances of rain in the last full week of

On July 10, 2022, at approximately 4:50 pm, the Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to the Nethery Road Fire in Kimble County East of US Hwy 377 S and SSE of Junction and worked in unified command with the local fire department. The fire had burned very intensely through a dense juniper component and fire crews experienced many access issues due to terrain. Aviation was utilized in suppression of the fire making retardant and water drops. The fire is 3,262 acres at 100% contained. Fire started on July 18, 2022 and is near Meridian, Bosque County Texas. Texas A&M Forest Service has been requested to assistance and worked in unified command with the local fire department. Heavy equipment was quickly engaged constructing line around the fire edge, along with fire engines supporting suppression efforts. In total, one abandoned home and three outbuildings were lost. 1 home was threatened and saved. The fire had moved NNE from FM 1991 but was stopped south of Hwy 22. At 4:30pm Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance from fire departments in Kaufman County for assistance with a grass fire in thick fuels. Working together in Unified Command, local and Texas A&M Forest Service resources are working to stop this fire.A variety of aerial and ground resources are working to stop the forwards process of this fire, including planes, helicopters, dozers, and engines. Dozers are creating lines around the fire free of plant material, or fuel, while the aircraft have been dropping water to slow down the fire.Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue through the week with little to no chance of reprieve. Residents should stay clear of the area to ensure that firefighters can work safely. When there is a lot of aircraft flying in an area, drones can cause some major problems. On the afternoon of July 20, 2022, a wildfire started approximately 2 miles East of the Wichita Falls Regional Airport. Church Rd Fire is burning in a mixture of short grass and thick mesquite. Friberg-Cooper Volunteer Fire Department requested assistance from Texas A&M Forest Service. The Minto Lakes Fire (#349) started on June 21st and is a lightning caused fire. The fire is burning between Washington Creek and the Chatanika River. The Murphy Dome Road boat launch is being used as an access point to transport and support firefighters.
