WW 421 SEVERE TSTM IA KS MO 160025Z - 160700Z
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 421
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
725 PM CDT Sat Jun 15 2024
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
Western and Central Iowa
Far Northeastern Kansas
Northwest Missouri
* Effective this Saturday night and Sunday morning from 725 PM
until 200 AM CDT.
* Primary threats include...
Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75
mph possible
Isolated large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible
A tornado or two possible
SUMMARY...A squall line will move northeastward into the Watch area
this evening. Severe gusts (60-75 mph) are possible with the more
intense portions of the squall line as it likely progresses west to
east across much of the Watch area. A tornado is possible,
especially with any longer-lived mesovortex circulation embedded
within the line. A large hail risk may accompany more cellular
storms later this evening into the early overnight.
The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 55
statute miles east and west of a line from 15 miles north northeast
of Fort Dodge IA to 40 miles west of Chillicothe MO. For a complete
depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update
(WOUS64 KWNS WOU1).
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.

MD 1284 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 422... FOR WESTERN NORTH DAKOTA INTO FAR NORTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
Mesoscale Discussion 1284
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1008 PM CDT Sat Jun 15 2024
Areas affected...western North Dakota into far northwestern South
Dakota
Concerning...Tornado Watch 422...
Valid 160308Z - 160415Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 422 continues.
SUMMARY...Severe risk continues within WW422, with potential for
large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two.
DISCUSSION...A line of severe thunderstorms continues to move
eastward into western North Dakota, with potential for damaging
winds 60-75 mph (some instances 75+ mph). This line of storms
continues to move into a favorably unstable environment with strong
deep layer shear and steep lapse rates. More favorable low-level
wind profiles are observed across northwestern North Dakota, where
0-3 km shear values are around 40-45 kts with 0-1 km shear around 20
kts. This may lead to some increase of risk for embedded
mesovortices and a tornado or two within the line.
Further south across southwestern North Dakota near the South Dakota
border, more discrete convection is ongoing with history of
producing hail up to baseball size. Given the weaker low-level shear
profiles in this region, the main threats are likely to continue to
be large hail and damaging wind, though a tornado cannot be ruled
out with more mature supercell modes.

MD 1283 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 421... FOR NORTHWEST MO INTO WESTERN/CENTRAL IA AND FAR SOUTHERN MN
Mesoscale Discussion 1283
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0934 PM CDT Sat Jun 15 2024
Areas affected...Northwest MO into western/central IA and far
southern MN
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 421...
Valid 160234Z - 160400Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 421
continues.
SUMMARY...Some threat for isolated damaging wind may spread eastward
tonight.
DISCUSSION...The storm cluster that earlier produced a 52 kt wind
gust in Falls City, NE has since shown signs of weakening over
southwest IA, likely due to decreasing instability and increasing
MLCINH. Despite the weakening trend, this cluster has a relatively
well-established cold pool, and isolated damaging wind remains a
possibility as it moves eastward tonight.
Farther north, an earlier storm cluster across northeast NE has
weakened somewhat as the embedded supercell structures have
dissipated. However, a small MCV appears to have formed out of this
cluster, and the downstream environment into northwest IA remains
somewhat more unstable and less capped compared to farther south.
Some threat for damaging wind could spread across northwest IA and
far southern MN with time tonight, though the need for additional
watch issuance is uncertain and will depend on short-term convective
trends.

MD 1281 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PARTS OF THE TX SOUTH PLAINS INTO THE NORTHERN PERMIAN BASIN VICINITY
Mesoscale Discussion 1281
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0825 PM CDT Sat Jun 15 2024
Areas affected...Parts of the TX South Plains into the northern
Permian Basin vicinity
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 160125Z - 160300Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...A localized threat for hail and severe gusts may persist
through 9-10 PM CDT.
DISCUSSION...A small supercell cluster has recently formed
west-southwest of Lubbock, within a region of moderate buoyancy and
moderate deep-layer shear (as noted in the recent KLBB VWP). Steep
midlevel lapse rates (as observed in the 00Z MAF sounding) will
continue to support a hail threat with these storms for as long as
they persist, along with some potential for isolated severe gusts.
Increasing MLCINH should lead to a weakening trend later tonight,
but some threat for hail of golfball size or larger may persist
through 9-10 PM CDT as storms spread slowly southeastward.
