Salmon fishing again banned off the California coast

1 year 4 months ago
All commercial and recreational salmon fishing off the coast of California was canceled for the second consecutive year for just the fourth time in state history, due to the meager salmon population. The Pacific Fishery Management Council, the authority responsible for setting Pacific salmon seasons, voted unanimously for the closure. The fishing industry supports many thousand jobs and was still feeling the effects of the shutdown last year. In 2023, a little more than 6,100 fall-run Chinook, returned to the upper Sacramento River to spawn, according to a February report by the fishery council. The average between 1996 and 2005 was more than 175,000 fish. The council also recommends that the California Fish and Game Commission ban river fishing. MD 0407 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 96...98... FOR PARTS OF SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST TX
Mesoscale Discussion 0407 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1012 PM CDT Tue Apr 09 2024 Areas affected...Parts of south and southeast TX Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 96...98... Valid 100312Z - 100445Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 96, 98 continues. SUMMARY...An increasing severe-wind threat is expected late tonight, along with a continued hail risk. Downstream watch issuance is likely by midnight CDT. DISCUSSION...A supercell cluster near/east of Austin has shown signs of accelerating eastward late this evening, with a substantial hail core recently noted in MRMS data near Bastrop. MLCAPE of greater than 2000 J/kg and favorable deep-layer shear will continue to support large hail (potentially greater than 2 inches in diameter) with embedded supercells in the cluster. Consolidating outflows may also pose an increasing severe-wind threat as this cluster moves eastward late tonight. Farther southwest, deep convection has recently erupted across southern portions of the Hill Country into western parts of deep south TX, where a cold front has intercepted returning low-level moisture. Instability and deep-layer shear are favorable for supercells in this region as well, and a threat for large to very large hail will accompany these storms as they move eastward. Most recent CAM guidance suggests eventual upscale growth in this region, which will then move quickly east-northeastward toward the TX Gulf Coast with time, accompanied by a threat for severe wind gusts potentially exceeding 75 mph. Some tornado threat could also eventually evolve near the TX Coast overnight, as the upscale growing storm cluster encounters deeper moisture and stronger low-level flow/shear. With a substantial severe threat expected to eventually spread toward the TX Gulf Coast, downstream watch issuance is likely by midnight CDT. ..Dean/Hart.. 04/10/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0406 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA INTO SOUTH-CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
Mesoscale Discussion 0406 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0949 PM CDT Tue Apr 09 2024 Areas affected...southwest Oklahoma into south-central Oklahoma Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 100249Z - 100345Z Probability of Watch Issuance...5 percent SUMMARY...A large hail and severe wind threat will persist for the next 1 to 2 hours across southwest Oklahoma. DISCUSSION...A consolidated line of storms has developed on the northwestern periphery of the instability gradient across southwest Oklahoma. This line has organized into a small bow with several reports of large hail and measured severe wind gusts. Instability is weak in the area (~250 J/kg MUCAPE) which casts doubt on the longevity of the severe weather threat. However, it has been efficient producing severe weather in a marginal environment. Therefore, this bowing segment may continue to produce some large hail and severe wind gusts as it moves east-northeast. Dewpoints in central Oklahoma are in the upper 40s which may be too dry to support a severe weather threat. However, dewpoints have increased to the mid to upper 50s across southern Oklahoma which may allow the southern extent of this bow to continue east along the instability gradient into the early overnight hours. ..Bentley.. 04/10/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
