SUMMARY...The ongoing cluster of severe storms will likely remain capable of damaging hail (some greater than 2 inches) and severe wind gusts into this evening. DISCUSSION...As of 0215 UTC, regional radar analysis showed a loose cluster of strong to severe storms ongoing across east-central CO. Over the last 2 hours, several reports of severe hail have occurred with these storms. Moderate instability and deep-layer shear remain in place ahead of the cluster suggesting a continued risk for strong updrafts capable of severe hail, some of which could be greater than 2 inches. Recent radar trends and surface observations also suggest stronger cold pool development is underway, which may eventually support the development of a small MCS. Along with the risk for hail, damaging wind potential may increase as storms begin to propagate east/southeast over the next few hours. Valid 010128Z - 010330Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 360 continues. SUMMARY...A potential for severe wind gusts and isolated large hail will likely continue this evening, as a cluster or line of strong to severe thunderstorms moves southeastward across west Texas. New watch issuance may be needed to the southeast of WW 360 later this evening. DISCUSSION...The latest hi-resolution radar imagery from Amarillo and Lubbock shows a relatively large cluster of strong to severe storms currently straddling the New Mexico-Texas state-line. This cluster is expected to become more organized as it moves southeastward toward an axis of strong instability, currently located over the eastern part of the Caprock. The RAP is estimating MLCAPE within this corridor in the 2000 to 3000 J/kg range. In addition, RAP forecast soundings across west Texas have 0-6 km shear in the 35 to 40 knot range, with 700-500 mb lapse rates near 7.5 C/km. This environment should be favorable for isolated supercells capable of large hail. Although the cells are primarily discrete, some short-term solutions suggest that a transition to linear mode will be possible. Valid 010015Z - 010215Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 362 continues. SUMMARY...A severe threat, with potential for large hail and severe wind gusts, will likely continue over the next couple of hours. Uncertainty exists concerning the persistence of the severe threat through the mid to late evening. If the threat can continue as the storms move towards the southern edge of watch 362, a new watch or extension in area could be needed. DISCUSSION...The latest hi-resolution radar imagery from New Braunfels, TX shows a small cluster of strong to severe storms located over the Texas Hill Country. The strongest storms are located from western Llano county eastward into far western Burnet county, where a couple of supercells appear to be ongoing. This area is near the eastern edge of a corridor of moderate instability, where the RAP currently has MLCAPE near 2000 J/kg. A gradient of instability extends southward from the Texas Hill Country to near the Rio Grande River. Some short-term model forecasts suggest that this will be the favored corridor for the development of new storms this evening. Other short-term forecasts suggest that the activity will decrease in intensity over the next few hours, with the severe threat becoming more isolated. Either of these two solutions appears feasible. A few severe storms with large hail and damaging winds remain possible across the central/southern High Plains into southwest Texas. ...01z Update... Split westerly-flow regime continues across the CONUS this evening. Weak southern branch extends across the Four Corners region into the lower MS Valley, and within this low-latitude belt of modest flow several robust thunderstorm clusters have evolved early this evening. An apparent weak short-wave trough is progressing across the High Plains of CO/NM and this feature appears partly responsible for recent uptick in isolated robust thunderstorms. While west-northwest 500mb flow is modest across this portion of the Plains, low-level inflow is not particularly responsive to this short wave and is seasonally weak, but moist. Isolated thunderstorm clusters will spread southeast this evening with an attendant risk for large hail and gusty winds. Farther south across the Edwards Plateau into the Hill Country of southwest TX, low-level confluence appears to be aiding a few thunderstorm clusters and isolated supercells from Burnet-Concho-MAF region.
