MD 1003 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 324... FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN INDIANA AND NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Mesoscale Discussion 1003 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0936 PM CDT Sun May 26 2024 Areas affected...portions of southern Indiana and northern Kentucky Concerning...Tornado Watch 324... Valid 270236Z - 270330Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 324 continues. SUMMARY...A well-developed bow echo will approach the Louisville metro in the next hour. Significant damaging winds (75+ mph) are possible along with QLCS tornadoes. DISCUSSION...The ongoing MCS over portions of the lower OH Valley has continued to intensify this evening. The northern most segment of the line has shown indications of a surging rear-inflow jet across southwestern IN. Observed 70-80 kt velocities at 2-3km ARL on the KVWX VAD lend high confidence to significant damaging wind potential with the apex of this bow over the next 1-2 hours. Experimental WOFS guidance also lends high confidence to strong damaging wind potential with this feature. With an estimated forward speed of 45-50 kt, damaging winds (some 75+ mph) will approach the Louisville metro and southern IN within the next hour. QLCS tornadoes are also possible given large low-level ESRH of 300-400 m2/s2. ..Lyons.. 05/27/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...LMK...IND...PAH... MD 1001 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 325... FOR PARTS OF THE MID ATLANTIC
Mesoscale Discussion 1001 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0918 PM CDT Sun May 26 2024 Areas affected...Parts of the Mid Atlantic Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 325... Valid 270218Z - 270345Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 325 continues. SUMMARY...Some damaging-wind threat may persist into late this evening. DISCUSSION...A long-lived QLCS with a history of producing some wind damage continues to move northeastward late this evening. Downstream instability continues to diminish with the loss of diurnal heating, but given the rather well-organized nature of the QLCS, some damaging-wind threat may persist downstream, as it moves through a relatively moist environment where rather strong heating occurred earlier today. Weakening deep-layer flow/shear with eastward extent and increasing MLCINH should eventually result in a definitive weakening trend later tonight. Additional downstream watch issuance is not anticipated, but local extension may need to be considered depending on convective trends over the next 1-2 hours. ..Dean/Smith.. 05/27/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 1000 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 321... FOR PARTS OF CENTRAL NC
Mesoscale Discussion 1000 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0905 PM CDT Sun May 26 2024 Areas affected...Parts of central NC Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 321... Valid 270205Z - 270330Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 321 continues. SUMMARY...The damaging-wind threat will continue in the short term, before an anticipated weakening trend late tonight. DISCUSSION...Some intensification of ongoing convection has recently been noted across central NC, with an east-southeastward moving storm cluster now overtaking a strong discrete cell that had developed ahead of the line. Some damaging-wind threat may persist in the short term ahead of this cluster, as it moves into a region where rather strong heating/mixing occurred earlier today. Only modest deep-layer shear and weak low-level flow were noted on the 00Z GSO sounding, though some increase in low-level flow has recently been noted on the KRAX VWP, and stronger midlevel flow to the southwest may begin impinging upon the ongoing storm cluster. Gradually increasing downstream MLCINH should eventually result in a weakening trend later tonight, such as what has already occurred across southern VA. However, at least an isolated damaging-wind threat may persist to the eastern edge of WW 321. ..Dean.. 05/27/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...RAH...RNK...GSP... MD 0999 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY FOR FAR SOUTHWEST OH...CENTRAL/EASTERN KY
Mesoscale Discussion 0999 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0859 PM CDT Sun May 26 2024 Areas affected...Far Southwest OH...Central/Eastern KY Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely Valid 270159Z - 270300Z Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent SUMMARY...The threat for severe gust and QLCS circulations will likely continue into far southwest Ohio and central/eastern Kentucky, and a Tornado Watch will likely be needed across the region to address this potential. DISCUSSION...Well-organized convective line continues to move eastward across southwest IN, southern IL, and far southwest KY at around 50 to 55 kt. This storm motion takes the line to the edge of Tornado Watch 324 at 0330Z to 0400Z. The airmass over the region is only weakly buoyant right now, but increasing low to mid-level moisture ahead of the line should promote the development of modest buoyancy. This buoyancy will be aided by strong low-level shear. Recent 00Z BNA sounding sampled strong low-level flow veering with height, with 0-1 km storm-relative helicity over 330 m2/s2. Recent JKL VAD sampled this increasing low-level flow as well, with 0-1 storm-relative helicity over 400 m2/s2. Given the favorable kinematics and organized character to the ongoing line, the expectation is that the threat for severe gusts and QLCS tornado circulations will continue into the region. A Tornado Watch will likely be needed across the region to address this potential. ..Mosier/Smith.. 05/27/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
