Dixon Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 11 months ago
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest fire managers are making use of a lightning-caused fire to meet multiple resource objectives in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. The Dixon Fire is located east of Silver Peak on the north side of Dixon Creek and was discovered on July 28 by aerial reconnaissance after storms passed through the area. Fire is a natural occurring component of Sierra Nevada ecosystems, important for both plants and animals. The reason for managing a naturally-occurring wildfire is to allow fire to play its historical role on the landscape. A naturally ignited fire can decrease the threat of future high intensity, high-severity wildfires by reducing hazardous fuel accumulations; reduce the risk of insect and disease outbreak; recycle nutrients that increase soil productivity; and improve wildlife habitat by increasing forbs/forage.The fifteen-acre Dixon Fire is burning deep in the Wilderness and being managed for the following multiple resource objectives: reducing...

Castle Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 11 months ago
The Kaibab National Forest has been allowing the lightning-caused Castle Fire to spread within a defined area in order to fulfill its natural role of reducing dense forest fuels and improving overall ecosystem health. The wildfire has now moved across the entire 19,368-acre planning area, and additional perimeter growth is not anticipated. However, pockets of unburned vegetation remain within the wildfire's interior and may burn over the coming days. The Castle Fire has been burning in an area with dense mixed conifer, heavy fuel loading, and a significant amount of dead and down trees. Allowing the fire to act as a natural disturbance process in the ecosystem helps meet a variety of resource objectives including restoring the forest structure to more historic conditions, reducing spruce and fir encroachment of area meadows, removing fuels that could feed future severe wildfires, and promoting aspen regeneration. A temporary Closure Order is in place for the Castle Fire area,...

577 Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 11 months ago
The 577 Fire is a low-intensity surface fire burning in a rugged area of the San Juan National Forest south of Pargin Mountain. The fire is about 77 acres. No homes are threatened by the fire, which was started by lightning on July 28. Fire activity is minimal at this time. There is some isolated interior heat in heavy dead and down areas with little smoke showing. Firefighters have been managing this low-intensity ground fire to improve forest health. They have carefully selected and prepared roads and trails around the fire to serve as containment lines. The surface fire is being allowed to creep within this containment area, reducing excess vegetation that has accumulated over years of fire suppression. If fire activity increases, containment action will be taken as appropriate. Fire managers expect the 577 Fire to continue its slow activity for several weeks, depending on weather conditions. On warm, dry days when the fire is more active, smoke may be visible from Durango,...
