Eden Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
A lightning-caused wildfire about 4 miles northeast of Clints Well that began last week is currently being used to clean up forest fuels and burn across the landscape for restoration efforts. The Eden Fire was reported by the Hutch Mountain lookout just after noon on August 29 and is currently 2,625 acres, producing light to minimal smoke. Because of low humidity and low fuel moisture, the fire has continued to burn actively since its discovery. The fire was being monitored for several days before determining it would be allowed to burn and remove hazardous fuels left from years of previous fires and debris buildup.

Fork Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
The Fork Fire in the South Warner Wilderness is a full suppression fire being managed using tactics that will have a low impact and maintain wilderness character. The fire has burned 39 acres of primarily dead and downed fuels. Fire activity has been minimal as the fire slowly consumes surface fuels. Over time the amount of heavy downed fuels on the ground, along with the proliferation of white fir trees has greatly increased the amount of fuel available to wildfire. This large quantity of fuel could increase the intensity of a fast moving fire and cause severe damage to the soils, trees and watershed. The Fork Fire will help reduce the dead and down fuel loading and improve wildlife habitat. The results are expected to promote long-term ecosystem integrity, sustainability and reduce the damage of high-severity wildland fires for the area in the future. The fire will also help reduce the amount of white fir trees encroaching on the ponderosa pines and shading out the quaking aspen...

204 Cow Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
The Cow Fire Area Closure Order has been changed. Refer to the closure map posted on the maps tab for the updated closure area. The 204 Cow Fire, on the Prairie City Ranger District, started August 9 as a result of multiple lightning storms that moved across the forest. The fire is burning in the remote high elevation area within the Glacier (1989) and Sheep Mountain (1990) fire scars. The primary objectives are to prevent fire from impacting high values such as private land, historic guard station, Cow Camp, active grazing allotments, and timber sales. Control features were established where firefighter exposure to hazards is minimized and there is a high probability of success in meeting these objectives and containing the fire.

Amole Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
The Carson National Forest will be managing the lightning-caused Amole Fire on the Camino Real Ranger District to spread within a defined area in order to fulfill its natural role of reducing dense forest fuels and improving overall ecosystem health. Removing these fuels will lessen the potential for future severe wildfires along Highway 518 and further protect high voltage transmission and fiber optic lines that service the Taos and Peñasco area. Fire managers are employing these tactics to allow the fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem, promoting a more fire resilient

Caribou Lake Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
This will be the last daily update for the Caribou Lake Fire unless significant activity occurs. Visit AKFireInfo for the current information about wildfires across Alaska. The Caribou Lake Fire, located 25 miles northeast of Homer, Alaska, was first reported on August 19, 2019. A load of BLM Alaska Smokejumpers initially responded to the fire to protect the nearly 30 structures that were threatened by the fire. Tactical firefighting aircraft including Fire Bosses, two heavy airtankers, and the local Alaska Division of Forestry helicopter also responded to assist firefighters with both water and retardant drops. On August 20, smokejumpers, assisted by a dozer, began building fire line on the southern edge of the fire to reduce the threat to nearby structures. The Caribou Lake Fire was active on August 21; moving toward structures as poor visibility limited aircraft support. As visibility improved, aircraft were able to drop retardant to slow the spread of the fire. The Redding...

Newman Fire BAER Info (Burned Area Emergency Response)

5 years 10 months ago
A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has been established to begin burned area surveys of the Museum Fire. BAER team assessments are rapid evaluations of post-fire conditions of the burned landscape to determine the level of risk from potential flooding and debris flow to values on National Forest System (NFS) lands such as human life, safety, property, and critical natural and cultural resources. If unacceptable risks are found the team recommends appropriate and effective emergency stabilization measures to reduce the risks to National Forest lands and values. BAER teams conduct field surveys and use science-based models to rapidly evaluate and assess the burned area. The BAER program is designed to identify and manage potential risks to resources on NFS lands and reduce these threats through appropriate emergency measures to protect human life and safety, property, and critical natural or cultural resources. BAER is an emergency program for stabilization work that...

Snow Peak Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
Snow Peak Resource Benefit Fire – Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (August 23, 2019) – The Snow Peak Fire was first detected on August 15, is currently estimated at 110 acres, and was determined to be caused by lightning from a previous storm. Fire managers considered the ignition source, location, management area, fuels and forest stand type, and seasonal fire danger into the decision to manage this fire for resource benefits. This decision was based on management direction set forth in the Forest Plan, which allows wildfire to fulfill its ecological role in diversifying forest structure and wildlife habitat. The Snow Peak Fire is in a roadless, backcountry management area, where prescribed and naturally ignited fire is the primary management tool for increasing stand diversity and big game forage, while decreasing hazardous fuels and diseased stands. This fire will be monitored and managed in a manner that adapts to changing conditions. Management...

Miller Gulch Fire (Wildfire)

5 years 10 months ago
Due to inaccessible terrain and rugged, steep conditions, the Missoula Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest is managing the lightning-caused Miller Gulch Fire with a confine and contain strategy, utilizing point-source protection, as needed around the valley bottom and Rock Creek. The Miller Gulch Fire is located approximately 20 miles south of I-90 off of Rock Creek Road and a mile east and upslope of Bitterroot Flat Campground, and is burning on the upper third portion of a steep ridgeline. After closely evaluating terrain conditions, expected weather patterns, and considering the relatively low probability for success to fully extinguish this fire, the decision was made to take a confine and contain suppression strategy, with point protection. By using natural features, existing prescribed fire project areas, and aviation resources, this strategy will limit exposure and therefore risk to firefighters due to the hazards associated with a backcountry fire environment.Difficult...
