Fire activity is minimal. The fire is smoldering. Please be prepared if traveling the roads in and next to the fire area and ensure proper travel preparations are made. The lightning caused Shady Fire was reported the evening of July 10. The fire is located approximately two (2) miles east of Seafoam Guard Station in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the Middle Fork Ranger District. Due to heavy fuel loading, active fire behavior, and the presence of numerous snags, firefighters have been unable to directly engage the fire. The Shady Fire is being managed with a point protection strategy (a wildfire response strategy, which protects specific assets or highly valued resources from the wildfire without directly halting the continued spread of the wildfire) to minimize exposure to fire personnel while protecting identified values. The strategy takes in to account exposure to firefighters, values at risk, impacts to area user groups, and wilderness values....

September 30, 2019: Although firefighters attempted to ignite the Red Feather Prescribed Burn today, the weather did not cooperate to get the desired conditions. It is still too damp. Fire managers do not expect ignitions tomorrow, but will continue to look for the next appropriate burn window to complete this important project. Please note that the temporary closure for this area remains in place This prescribed burn is located north of Red Feather Lakes, Colo., east of the Crystal Lakes Subdivision at 8,500 feet elevation. A great deal of work has already taken place on this burn and provides a treated line or previously burned ground around much of the perimeter. Firefighters plan to burn approximately 300 acres of unburned ground, as well as reenter some areas that were burned previously. In some of those previously burned areas, the burn was conducted when there was higher fuel moisture and snow. This reentry will allow firefighters to target fuel that did not burn the...

Lightning ignited the fire on June 5, 2019 in a remote area of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness. The area was classified as a Limited Protection Zone in accordance with The Interagency Fire Management Plans for Alaska. That classification indicates low values at risk and difficult or costly suppression efforts. Consequently, it was initially put in a monitor only status. Over the next week the fire grew from an estimated 4 to 5 acres to over 12,700 acres. Active suppression efforts were implemented and the first of several incident management teams was assigned. Important infrastructure was protected, but the spread continued, reaching 15,600 acres on June 19. Heavy smoke became an issue triggering a temporary closure on the Sterling Highway and contributing to an air quality advisory for southcentral Alaska. During the last week of June, the perimeter grew from 32,300 acres to over 62,000 acres under unseasonably hot, dry conditions. In early July, spread to the south...

Schaeffer Fire Update Kernville, Ca. September 30, 2019 – The Schaeffer Fire has shown minimal fire growth in the last week, bringing the acreage to 285 acres and 50% containment. This lightning fire is burning in areas of dense snags in the McNally Fire scar of 2002 with heavy dead and down timber amongst mixed brush, white thorn, manzanita and areas of mixed conifer and fir. Firefighters are continuing fire suppression efforts and strengthening fire lines by prepping 20’ out from the Durrwood Creek, Schaeffer Trail #33E24 and North Meadow Trail #33E27. Dylan Johnston, Schaeffer Incident Commander trainee, stated ”Later in the week, as conditions permit, crews will be continuing to utilize the “fire to the ground” tactic to eliminate unburned pockets of fuel between the fire and the hand line”. If left unburned, these could ignite later and put firefighters at risk. Burning the pockets also ensures a safe barrier between the fire and the containment lines. A closure...

The Lincoln National Forest is planning to allow the lightning-caused Middle Fire on the Sacramento Ranger District to fulfill its natural role of reducing forest fuels in hopes of reducing high-severity wildfire in the future. Fire managers expect the Middle Fire to grow as it moves west through ponderosa pine in the bottom of Middle Canyon. Located about 8 miles southeast of Weed and 10 miles southeast of Mayhill, the low-intensity fire is in an ideal location with no homes, infrastructure or other values at risk. There are no closure orders in effect..Forest managers have established a planning area where the fire will be allowed to grow. This does not mean the wildfire will move across the entire planning area. Weather conditions and terrain will be significant factors in long-term activity. Rain is expected throughout the week.
