Allegheny NF Spring Prescribed Burns (Prescribed Fire)

3 years 3 months ago
The US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service plans to use prescribed fire as a forest management tool during April and May 2022 on the Allegheny National Forest. We do not have exact dates yet. Our operations are weather dependent, and we will implement prescribed fires at the optimal time to achieve the best results. We will notify communities near the burn sites 24 to 48 hours before ignitions.  To keep community members well informed we will post road signs, road guards, and live information on our social media accounts while burns are conducted. This spring, we plan to treat 800 acres spread across five project areas located in both the Marienville and Bradford Ranger Districts.   We conduct prescribed fires with the safety of the public and firefighters as the highest priority. We use fire as a tool only when the parameters of our approved burn plan are met, including wind speed and direction, relative humidity, temperature, fire danger, seasonal restrictions, and...

San Juan NF Prescribed Fire Program (Prescribed Fire)

3 years 3 months ago
The San Juan National Forest Fuels Management Staff are planning several prescribed burns this spring.  Operations began in April and could continue through May. Prescribed fire projects are weather dependent and may take several weeks to complete. Burning operations will be conducted by U.S. Forest Service personnel assisted by fire resources from cooperating agencies. Reintroduction of fire is necessary to improve and restore vegetative conditions. This effort will reduce hazardous ground fuels, lessen the risk of unplanned large-scale wildfire, help restore ecosystems, and improve wildlife habitat. Prescribed fire also reduces the ladder fuels that can carry fire into the canopy, killing mature trees. Columbine Ranger District's Vallecito-Piedra units: VP1A NW (1318 acres) VP1B (672 acres)VP1C (295 acres) VP2D (181 acres)   Dolores Ranger District:The most likely order of prescribed burns is as follows, depending on weather conditions:1st Boggy Draw: 4331 total...
