MD 0358 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...TORNADO WATCH LIKELY FOR EASTERN MISSISSIPPI...CENTRAL ALABAMA...NORTHWEST GEORGIA
Mesoscale Discussion 0358 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0553 PM CDT Tue Apr 02 2024 Areas affected...Eastern Mississippi...Central Alabama...Northwest Georgia Concerning...Severe potential...Tornado Watch likely Valid 022253Z - 030200Z Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent SUMMARY...Thunderstorms will become more numerous through the evening, with an increasing risk of tornadoes and damaging winds. Watch issuance is expected in the next couple of hours. DISCUSSION...A very warm/moist and moderately unstable and only weakly capped air mass is in place this evening across much of southern MS/AL, with dewpoints in the mid/upper 60s. Recent satellite/radar loops show isolate showers and thunderstorms beginning to develop in this region. Models have been consistent in the development of a strong southerly low-level jet by mid-evening, resulting in northward advection of the better moisture and strengthening low-level wind fields. Forecast soundings suggest rapid enlargement of hodographs after dark, with parameters becoming quite favorable for supercells capable of tornadoes and damaging winds. A tornado watch will be needed for parts of this region in the next couple of hours as more robust convective initiation begins. ..Hart/Guyer.. 04/02/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0354 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN WISCONSIN AND THE WESTERN/CENTRAL UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN
Mesoscale Discussion 0354 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0349 PM CDT Tue Apr 02 2024 Areas affected...portions of eastern Wisconsin and the western/central Upper Peninsula of Michigan Concerning...Heavy snow Valid 022049Z - 030145Z SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snow will gradually expand in coverage over parts of WI and MI this afternoon/evening. Rates of 1-1.5 in/hour are likely within the heaviest banding along the western shores of Lake Michigan. DISCUSSION...As of 2045 UTC, regional radar and surface analysis showed a broad precipitation shield expanding north/northeastward from a deepening surface cyclone centered over far northern IL. Within this comma head structure, moderate to heavy rain has gradually transitioned to snow. While temperatures have been only marginally conducive for snow thus far, dynamic cooling and low-level cold advection should allow for a full transition to snow from west to east. Hi-res forecast guidance suggests the development of one or more mesoscale bands is likely through this evening. Likely driven by frictional convergence on the western lake shore and slantwise convection, snow rates within some of these banded structures may reach 1-1.5 in/hr. Heavy snow will continue to expand east/northeastward across eastern WI and the western UP through the afternoon and into the evening. Confidence in the highest rates will remain along the western lake shore where forcing for ascent and inland moisture advection are expected to be the strongest. However, periodic heavy snowfall with rates near 1 in/hr will remain possible across much of WI and the UP through tonight. ..Lyons.. 04/02/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0357 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 78... FOR SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL OHIO...NORTHERN KENTUCKY...AND NORTHERN WEST VIRGINIA.
Mesoscale Discussion 0357 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0515 PM CDT Tue Apr 02 2024 Areas affected...southern and central Ohio...northern Kentucky...and northern West Virginia. Concerning...Tornado Watch 78... Valid 022215Z - 022345Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 78 continues. SUMMARY...A threat for all severe weather hazards will continue through the evening. DISCUSSION...Several supercells with a history of tornadoes are moving into southwest Ohio. These supercells will continue to pose a tornado threat as they move east across southern Ohio. Additional development is ongoing ahead of this activity which may also pose a tornado threat as storms mature. The 21Z ILN RAOB shows an uncapped, moderately unstable atmosphere with low-level shear favorable for tornadoes and some strong tornadoes. Expect a similar environment to spread across much of eastern and central Ohio over the next few hours as airmass recovery continues in the wake of earlier convection. In addition, winds have backed across Ohio with strong pressure falls in response to the rapidly deepening surface low near southern Lake Michigan which will continue to support a tornado threat. The greatest tornado threat is expected south of I-70 in Ohio where dewpoints of 63 to 65F and greater instability will support a greater tornado threat amid favorable low-level shear. Expansion of tornado watch 78 will be needed with an additional tornado watch likely across much of southern, eastern, and potentially northern Ohio. ..Bentley/Guyer.. 04/02/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0355 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR EASTERN TENNESSEE AND FAR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
Mesoscale Discussion 0355 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0433 PM CDT Tue Apr 02 2024 Areas affected...Eastern Tennessee and far western North Carolina. Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 022133Z - 022300Z Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent SUMMARY...A tornado watch may be needed across eastern Tennessee and potentially into far western North Carolina. DISCUSSION...A supercell has moved east of watch 79 across eastern Tennessee. Additional storm development is questionable as widespread thunderstorms have developed to the west with anvil debris across much of eastern Tennessee. However, at least scattered supercell development remains possible through early evening. The MRX VWP currently shows less than 100 m2/s2 0-1km SRH with the stronger low-level jet to the west. This wind profile is expected to increase after 00Z as this low-level jet slowly moves east. A tornado watch will eventually be needed this evening, as low-level shear and storm coverage increases. ..Bentley/Guyer.. 04/02/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0356 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 78... FOR CENTRAL KENTUCKY...NORTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...SOUTHWEST OHIO
Mesoscale Discussion 0356 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0434 PM CDT Tue Apr 02 2024 Areas affected...Central Kentucky...Northern Middle Tennessee...Southwest Ohio Concerning...Tornado Watch 78... Valid 022134Z - 022300Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 78 continues. SUMMARY...The potential for multiple discrete supercells and attendant tornadoes is increasing along an axis from southwest Ohio into central Kentucky and northern Middle Tennessee. DISCUSSION...Regional radars show a line of thunderstorms intensifying from southeast IN into west-central KY and northwest TN. Multiple cells in this line have developed mid-level rotation in the past 45 min, with reported tornadoes in the storm west of Cincinnati. Clouds have thinned ahead of this activity, where temperatures have locally warmed into the mid 70s along with dewpoints in the mid 60s. A 50+ knot southerly low-level jet is aiding in impressive shear parameters, with VAD profiles showing 0-3km SRH values of 300-500 m2/s2. Discrete supercells in this line appear to be the primary concern for tornadoes (potentially strong) during the next 1-2 hours. Steep mid-level lapse rates will also promote large hail in the stronger cells. ..Hart.. 04/02/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
