DISCUSSION...Storms initiating to the northeast through east of the Greater St. Louis area, have been supported by forcing for ascent associated with low-level warm advection, in the wake of mid-level troughing slowly digging through the upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley. This has been occurring within a very moist (including upper 70s surface dew points) and highly buoyant boundary layer, in the presence of at least modest clockwise curved hodographs, beneath 30-40+ kt northwesterly flow in the 700-500 mb layer. While a few supercell structures have evolved, with gradual decoupling of the boundary layer underway and flow closer to the surface (near and below 850 mb) forecast to remain more modest, tornadic potential seems likely to remain limited. Valid 300233Z - 300400Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 561 continues. SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across portions of southern/southeastern North Dakota and northern/northeastern South Dakota in Severe Thunderstorm Watch 561. The severe threat may spread eastward out of the watch, and a new watch or watch extension may be needed. DISCUSSION...An increasingly organized north/south-oriented MCS is tracking eastward across south-central ND and north-central SD at around 30-40 kt, while an additional cluster of storms to its east is drifting slowly northward within a warm-advection wing. The MCS is gradually merging/overtaking the eastern cluster. Ahead of these storms, 2500-3000 J/kg MLCAPE (sampled by the ABR 00Z sounding) will likely support the maintenance of this activity as it continues eastward. Scattered severe wind gusts and large hail will be possible. A watch may be needed for parts of the area within the hour or so. DISCUSSION...An intense supercell cluster with a history of producing severe wind gusts over south-central SD (recently measured 84 mph gust in Tripp County, SD) is merging with other severe storms in its immediate vicinity. This trend of upscale growth may continue over the next few hours, as these storms continue tracking southeastward amid a gradually strengthening low-level jet. Ahead of the storms, a northwest/southeast corridor of 3000-3500 J/kg MLCAPE is in place, as well as 40-50 kt of effective shear oriented perpendicular to the evolving/upscale-growing cold pool. These factors should support the maintenance or intensification of an upscale-growing cluster of severe storms, capable of producing scattered severe wind gusts (60-80 mph) and instances of large hail.
