MD 1745 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 531...534... FOR SOUTHEAST MONTANA/SOUTHERN NORTH DAKOTA/NORTHERN SOUTH DAKOTA
Mesoscale Discussion 1745
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1058 PM CDT Sun Jul 20 2025
Areas affected...Southeast Montana/southern North Dakota/northern
South Dakota
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 531...534...
Valid 210358Z - 210530Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 531, 534
continues.
SUMMARY...Severe wind/hail potential continues through late evening
and possibly into the overnight from southeast Montana across
southern North Dakota and northern South Dakota. Severe Thunderstorm
Watches 531/534 continue, and the southern North Dakota/northern
South Dakota border vicinity is being monitored for a possible
additional Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
DISCUSSION...Multiple storm clusters with a history of
severe-caliber winds and/or hail persist from far southeast Montana
(Carter County) to near the North Dakota/South Dakota border
vicinity as of 1050pm CDT/950pm MDT. Steady boundary-layer cooling
has occurred over the past couple of hours, and storms should ingest
increasingly elevated inflow over the next few hours. However,
existing storm organization and modest low-level jet influence
should tend to sustain storms east-southeastward along the regional
instability gradient. At least some severe-caliber wind/hail
potential will probably continue into the overnight, and potentially
into areas to the east of the current Watches 531/534 across far
southern North Dakota and northern South Dakota.

MD 1744 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 531... FOR SOUTHEAST MONTANA/SOUTHWEST NORTH DAKOTA AND FAR NORTHWEST SOUTH DAKOTA
Mesoscale Discussion 1744
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0755 PM CDT Sun Jul 20 2025
Areas affected...Southeast Montana/Southwest North Dakota and far
northwest South Dakota
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 531...
Valid 210055Z - 210230Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 531
continues.
SUMMARY...Potential for large hail and severe-caliber wind gusts
will continue across southeast Montana and southwest North Dakota,
and possibly into far northwest South Dakota.
DISCUSSION...A few isolated supercells persist as of 750pm CDT/650pm
MDT particularly across southwest North Dakota within the primary
instability axis, while other clusters of storms have begun to
evolve and organize across southeast Montana south of I-94 and
near/east of I-90. Miles City, MT measured a 59 kt/68 mph wind gust
around 550pm MDT, while Big Horn County Airport more recently
measured a 75 mph gust. While episodic large hail will continue
regionally, severe-wind potential should somewhat focus across far
southeast Montana into far southwest North Dakota (potentially
including the Baker and Bowman areas), and possibly into far
northwest South Dakota over the next few hours as additional cell
mergers/upscale growth likely occurs.

MD 1742 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 533... FOR PARTS OF SOUTHERN IL/IN INTO NORTHERN KY
Mesoscale Discussion 1742
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0736 PM CDT Sun Jul 20 2025
Areas affected...Parts of southern IL/IN into northern KY
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 533...
Valid 210036Z - 210200Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 533
continues.
SUMMARY...Damaging wind and perhaps a brief tornado remain possible
this evening.
DISCUSSION...A compact bowing segment has developed and is moving
into southwest IN as of 0030 UTC. This bowing segment is moving
quickly east-southeastward along a surface boundary and instability
gradient, and will pose a threat of at least localized wind damage
for as long as it persists this evening.
Other semi-discrete convection has developed both ahead of this
bowing cluster, and in its wake across south-central IL. With MLCAPE
of 1500-2500 J/kg and effective shear of 25-35 kt, organized
convection will remain possible through the evening, including
potential for occasional supercell structures. Warm temperatures
aloft and weak midlevel lapse rates may tend to limit the magnitude
of the severe threat to some extent, but locally damaging wind and
perhaps a brief tornado cannot be ruled out with any persistent
discrete cells. Any additional upscale-growing clusters could pose a
threat for more concentrated wind damage, though in the absence of
stronger low-level flow, this potential is uncertain.
