MD 0736 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR NORTHEASTERN LOUISIANA...SOUTHEASTERN ARKANSAS...AND WEST-CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI
Mesoscale Discussion 0736
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0624 PM CDT Thu May 09 2024
Areas affected...northeastern Louisiana...southeastern
Arkansas...and west-central Mississippi
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible
Valid 092324Z - 100100Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent
SUMMARY...Storms continue to gradually increase across the
west-central Mississippi Vicinity. Additional storm development may
require WW issuance to be considered.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows convection gradually increasing
in coverage and intensity across the west-central Mississippi
vicinity, in the vicinity of a west-to-east baroclinic zone. Though
broad-scale ascent remains weak, the thermodynamic environment
(characterized by 4000 to 5000 J/kg mixed-layer CAPE) remains
strongly favorable for intense convection. Given enhanced mid-level
westerlies contributing to favorable shear for organized storms,
conditional severe-weather potential may be realized across this
region over the next few hours. We will continue to monitor
convective evolution, with additional development potentially
requiring consideration of new WW issuance, or extension of
existing/nearby watches.

MD 0735 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 221... FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL TEXAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0735
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0502 PM CDT Thu May 09 2024
Areas affected...portions of central Texas
Concerning...Tornado Watch 221...
Valid 092202Z - 092330Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 221 continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across Tornado Watch 221. 2-4
inch diameter hail and 60-85 mph wind gusts are the main concerns,
though a tornado cannot be completely ruled out.
DISCUSSION...Three large, intense supercells, with echo tops
exceeding 50 kft, continue to progress southeastward across central
portions of TX, with the storms southwest of the Metroplex having a
history of producing 2-3 inch diameter hail. Ahead of the storms,
upper 80s F/mid 70s F surface temperatures/dewpoints, overspread by
8 C/km mid-level lapse rates, are boosting MLCAPE to the 3000-5000
J/kg range (per 21Z mesoanalysis). Coinciding with this extreme
buoyancy are elongated hodographs and 50-70 kts of effective bulk
shear. The preceding CAPE/shear parameter space suggests that
intense supercells with 2-4 inch diameter hailstones and severe
gusts (perhaps up to 85 mph) should continue over the next several
hours, as also suggested by the latest Warn-on-Forecast ensemble
output. The severe gusts will be most likely with any supercells
that can merge and support cold pool development.
Storms appear to progress immediately behind a surface boundary,
that combined with weak low-level speed an directional shear (per
recent regional VADs) should temper the tornado threat to a degree.
However, given the extreme buoyancy, any supercell that can move
ahead of the boundary could potentially produce a tornado. Later
this evening, some upscale growth of the supercells into one or more
MCSs appears likely, and the severe wind threat should increase
accordingly.

MD 0734 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY FOR NORTHEASTERN MISSISSIPPI INTO A LARGE PORTION OF ALABAMA
Mesoscale Discussion 0734
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0439 PM CDT Thu May 09 2024
Areas affected...northeastern Mississippi into a large portion of
Alabama
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely
Valid 092139Z - 092315Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent
SUMMARY...Convective initiation is ongoing across northern Alabama,
and will likely expand over the next 1 to 2 hours. New WW will
likely be needed.
DISCUSSION...Latest visible satellite imagery shows a developing
convective tower near Birmingham, near the intersection of a weak
west-to-east baroclinic zone, and an outflow boundary from prior
convection that extends southward/south-southeastward into
southeastern Alabama. While large-scale ascent appears to be weak,
an otherwise volatile environment is in place, with mixed-layer CAPE
averaging 3000 to 4000 J/kg on the warm side of these boundaries,
and strong mid-level westerly flow (in excess of 60 kt at mid
levels). Should additional convection evolve -- as appears likely
per the character of the cu field -- substantial severe-weather risk
would accompany the storms. This would include potential for
strong/damaging winds and very large hail. Some tornado risk could
also evolve locally, given the presence of the aforementioned
boundaries, though low-level flow/shear appears limited at this
time.

MD 0732 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY FOR FROM FAR NORTHEAST TEXAS ACROSS SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0732
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0326 PM CDT Thu May 09 2024
Areas affected...From far northeast Texas across southern Arkansas
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely
Valid 092026Z - 092300Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent
SUMMARY...Storms capable of large hail are expected to move east
across the ArkLaTex and into much of southern Arkansas through
evening.
DISCUSSION...Surface analysis shows an extensive stationary front
across northern TX and into southern AR and toward the MS/TN border.
South of this boundary, a very moist and unstable air mass exists
with MLCAPE exceeding 4000 J/kg. While low-level winds are weak,
moderate mid to high levels winds will help move storms eastward
along and north of the boundary, with deep layer shear of 60-70 kt
Forward-propagating cells or eventual bows will be possible, and the
strongest cells may produce very large damaging hail.
