MD 1056 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 346... FOR SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
Mesoscale Discussion 1056
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0605 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...Southern High Plains
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 346...
Valid 282305Z - 290100Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 346
continues.
SUMMARY...Severe risk will concentrate across central and eastern
portions of ww0346 over the next few hours. Hail remains the primary
threat.
DISCUSSION...Multiple storm mergers, and significant convective
overturning, have stabilized portions of the southern TX Panhandle
and southeast CO. Over the last hour or so, a significant cluster of
storms has evolved over the western OK and northwestern TX
Panhandles region. This activity may begin to propagate east into
portions of ww0346 that have yet to experience significant
convection, especially the northern TX Panhandle into the central OK
Panhandle. Large hail is the primary threat.

MD 1055 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS
Mesoscale Discussion 1055
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0545 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...Central High Plains
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible
Valid 282245Z - 282345Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent
SUMMARY...Severe risk is increasing across portions of eastern CO
into western KS. Large hail is the primary threat and a severe
thunderstorm watch is being considered.
DISCUSSION...Boundary-layer lapse rates have steepened significantly
across the central High Plains late this afternoon. Southeasterly
low-level flow has forced mid 50s surface dew points into eastern CO
and inhibition is now negligible. Scattered thunderstorms are now
evolving along the northern edge of an instability axis
characterized by 1500 J/kg MLCAPE within a modestly sheared
environment. Hail is likely occurring with the most robust updrafts
and this activity should spread southeast into portion of western
KS, just north of ww0346. Some consideration is being given to a new
severe thunderstorm watch across this region.

MD 1054 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 344... FOR PORTIONS OF WESTERN TEXAS
Mesoscale Discussion 1054
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0400 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...portions of western Texas
Concerning...Tornado Watch 344...
Valid 282100Z - 282230Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 344 continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across Tornado Watch 344.
Large hail should be the main threat, though a couple of tornadoes
may still occur with one of the longer-lasting, dominant supercells.
Severe gusts would become an increasing concern if storm mergers
occur.
DISCUSSION...Multiple multicells and supercells are progressing
across the western TX Panhandle, with several having a history of
large hail. Current thinking is that these storms will progress
eastward while percolating in intensity, with a continued threat of
large hail (perhaps exceeding 2 inches in diameter). Regional VADs
show elongated hodographs, but with modest (at best) curvature in
the lowest few km. As such, the tornado threat should be limited to
any of the more dominant, discrete supercells that can become
long-lived. Should storms merge into an MCS, severe winds would
become the main threat, and a 65+ kt gust or two cannot be ruled
out.

MD 1052 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 343... FOR SOUTHERN LOUISIANA
Mesoscale Discussion 1052
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0348 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...southern Louisiana
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 343...
Valid 282048Z - 282215Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 343
continues.
SUMMARY...Strong to severe gust potential continues across Severe
Thunderstorm Watch 343 in southern Louisiana.
DISCUSSION...A cluster of thunderstorms along a surface boundary
over southern Louisiana will continue to propagate generally
east/southeast over the next few hours. Forward propagation of this
cluster has slowed from earlier this afternoon. However, a very
moist and unstable boundary layer will continue to promote strong to
severe gusts in the 50-65 mph range. Convection should approach the
coast and move offshore by early evening.

MD 1053 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN TEXAS ALONG THE RIO GRANDE
Mesoscale Discussion 1053
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0349 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...portions of southern Texas along the Rio Grande
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible
Valid 282049Z - 282215Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent
SUMMARY...The severe threat may be increasing along portions of
southern TX bordering the Rio Grande. It is unclear if the storms
can move off of the higher terrain and cross the river. Should this
occur, a severe hail/wind threat may materialize, and either an
extension of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 345 or the issuance of a new
WW may be needed.
DISCUSSION...Robust convective development, including supercells, is
occurring over the higher terrain in northeastern Mexico. These
storms are currently attempting to move off of the higher terrain,
preceded by an ambient environment characterized by 2500+ J/kg
MLCAPE and modestly curved but elongated hodographs with 60+ kts of
effective bulk shear. Strong easterly surface winds have also been
noted at observations sites along the Rio Grande, suggesting that
these storms are benefiting from abundant inflow. As such, an
appreciable risk for severe hail and wind would accompany these
storms (including the possibility of one or more instances of 2+
inch diameter hail or a 65+ kt wind gust). The main question though
is if these storms can progress off of the higher terrain and cross
the Rio Grande into TX. Confidence in this scenario is not overly
high, but convective trends are being monitored for this
possibility. Should this occur, either an extension of Severe
Thunderstorm Watch 345 or the issuance of a new Severe Thunderstorm
watch would become necessary.

MD 1050 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL...SOUTHERN...AND EASTERN IDAHO INTO SOUTHWESTERN MONTANA
Mesoscale Discussion 1050
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0213 PM CDT Tue May 28 2024
Areas affected...portions of central...southern...and eastern Idaho
into southwestern Montana
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 281913Z - 282145Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...A couple of severe gusts will be possible with the
stronger storms today. The severe threat should be sparse and a WW
issuance is not expected.
DISCUSSION...High-based thunderstorms are gradually increasing in
coverage over portions of central ID into southwestern MT. These
storms are developing atop a deep boundary layer, comprised of 9-10
C/km surface-500 mb lapse rates (per latest RAP forecast soundings).
The stronger, longer-lasting thunderstorms may generate enough
evaporative cooling to support strong downbursts, where a couple of
severe surface gusts may be observed. Still, the severe threat will
be isolated, precluding the need of a WW issuance.
