MD 0467 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 119... FOR PARTS OF NORTHEAST AND EAST CENTRAL MISSOURI
Mesoscale Discussion 0467 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0623 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...Parts of northeast and east central Missouri Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 119... Valid 162323Z - 170130Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 119 continues. SUMMARY...The risk for widely scattered additional strong to severe thunderstorm development near/east of Columbia and Jefferson City into areas northwest of St. Louis may still not be negligible. However, it appears to be lowering and likely to diminish further with the loss of daytime heating. If current trends continue, the watch may be cancelled within the next hour or so. DISCUSSION...In the wake of an initial band of weakening convection which has spread east of the Mississippi River, a moistening low-level environment has contributed to a corridor of increasing potential instability across much of northeastern into east central and south central Missouri. This is ahead of a remnant dryline advancing across/east of the Kirksville, Columbia and Springfield vicinities. Renewed discrete thunderstorm development is ongoing as far south as areas to the southeast of Kirksville, with additional deepening convection noted near/west of Columbia and Jefferson City. Some convection allowing guidance, including the High Resolution Rapid Refresh suggest further intensification of the southern convective development might still be possible, before spreading near/to the northwest of the Greater St. Louis area through 00-02Z. Based on the Rapid Refresh forecast track of a weakening 500 mb jet core, and associated mid-level subsidence/warming, this would seem be the southern/southeastern limit for stronger convective development. However, based on latest water vapor imagery, the potential for new storms south of the Hannibal/Quincy area is becoming low. ..Kerr.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0466 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 117...118... FOR PORTIONS OF NORTH-CENTRAL IOW AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA.
Mesoscale Discussion 0466 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0612 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...portions of north-central iow and southern Minnesota. Concerning...Tornado Watch 117...118... Valid 162312Z - 170015Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 117, 118 continues. SUMMARY...The severe risk over tornado Watch 118 may continue for another 1-2 hours. Some redevelopment along the dryline is possible with a risk for an isolated tornado and hail. DISCUSSION...Ongoing storms over eastern IA have pushed east of the dryline allowing for clearing over parts of north-central IA and far southern MN. Some air mass recovery is possible in the next 1-2 hours with strong mid-level ascent overspreading the area. Upper 50s to low 60s F surface dewpoints are supporting 500-1000 J/kg of MUCAPE with strong mid and low-level shear profiles in place. Renewed development has recently taken place near the IA/MN border suggesting some redevelopment is possible. The main threats would be an isolated tornado or hail with any storms able to become established. Confidence is not high given the degree of convective overturning that has taken place. However, the severe risk may continue for another hour or two. ..Lyons.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... ATTN...WFO...DVN...ARX...MPX...DMX...FSD... MD 0465 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 117... FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN/SOUTHEASTERN IOWA INTO NORTHWESTERN ILLINOIS
Mesoscale Discussion 0465 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0447 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...portions of eastern/southeastern Iowa into northwestern Illinois Concerning...Tornado Watch 117... Valid 162147Z - 162315Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 117 continues. SUMMARY...The ongoing convective line has evolved into semi-discrete supercells which will allow for an increase in the risk for all hazards over the next couple of hours. A favorable shear/thermodynamic environment may also support a strong (EF-2+) tornado. DISCUSSION...As of 2140 UTC, regional radar and satellite data showed the ongoing convective line in southeastern IA has trended towards more semi-discrete elements, especially with southward extent, over the last hour. The broader environment remains favorable for severe storms with moderate buoyancy and strong deep-layer shear established. Low-level shear has also increased ahead of the storms with backed surface flow supporting 300-400 m2/s2 of effective SRH observed from area VADs and SPC mesoanalysis. With a more supercellular mode emerging, the potential for stronger mesocyclones within a strong low-level shear environment suggests an increasing potential for tornadoes, in addition to the continued risk for damaging winds and hail. STP values of 2-3 along with 0-3km CAPE of 50-100 J/kg favor strong low-level stretching of vertical vorticity. Large low-level hodogaphs may also support the risk for a strong (EF-2+) tornado with the longer lived supercells. This increasing risk may extended near the Quad Cities and farther east into parts of northwestern IL over the next couple of hours. ..Lyons.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0464 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHERN/CENTRAL IL
Mesoscale Discussion 0464 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0340 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...portions of northern/central IL Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 162040Z - 162215Z Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent SUMMARY...Severe potential may slowly increase over the next few hours into parts of northern and central Illinois. A watch may be needed at some point late this afternoon, but timing remains uncertain. DISCUSSION...A band of storms continues to lift northeast across eastern IA into western IL this afternoon. Much of the convection is somewhat disorganized in a messy storm mode. Downstream into northern/central IL, some modest increase in boundary-layer moisture still may occur as a warm front lifts north. While strong heating has occurred, some weak inhibition remains over parts of the area. Nevertheless, modest boundary-layer moisture beneath midlevel lapse rates around 7 C/km are supporting weak instability (MLCAPE 1000 J/kg or less). The initial band of convection moving toward the MCD area may largely remain unproductive. However, as large-scale ascent increasing toward evening, a secondary band of convection may move into the area and post more of a severe risk. Given the somewhat limited thermodynamic environment (despite favorable vertical shear), severe potential may only gradually increase toward evening. The area will be monitored for potential watch issuance, but timing is uncertain. ..Leitman/Guyer.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0462 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN ARKANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0462 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0316 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...central and eastern Arkansas Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 162016Z - 162145Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...Isolated large hail is possible this afternoon/evening. DISCUSSION...A plume of rich low-level moisture has advected across eastern Texas, Louisiana and into southern Arkansas. Weak isentropic ascent has been sufficient for storm development on the leading edge of this moist plume. Effective shear of 50 to 55 knots and will be proficient for organized storms, including supercells. However, warm mid-level temperatures and weak ascent will be the primary limiting factor to a greater threat. Therefore, a few stronger storms may develop with a threat for large hail, but this threat is expected to remain too isolated to warrant a watch. ..Bentley/Guyer.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0463 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 118... FOR NORTHERN IOWA
Mesoscale Discussion 0463 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0336 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024 Areas affected...Northern Iowa Concerning...Tornado Watch 118... Valid 162036Z - 162130Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 118 continues. SUMMARY...The tornado threat within watch 118 is now confined to northern Iowa. DISCUSSION...As the Pacific front interacted with convection across eastern Nebraska around 19Z, a strong outflow boundary pushed well ahead of convection which has essentially ended the severe weather threat for the western half of watch 118. In addition, this outflow boundary has recently collided with the warm front near the intersection of MN/IA/SD and thus, expect the storm which moved north of the boundary to continue to weaken. Therefore, the only remaining favorable airmass is northeast of the dryline across north-central Iowa. In this region, a few tornadoes have been confirmed with the low-topped supercell in Pocahontas county at 2030Z. Visible satellite and radar trends show additional storms developing southeast of this storm which may also pose a tornado threat this afternoon and into the early evening as they move north. ..Bentley.. 04/16/2024 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
