SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0740 PM CDT Tue Aug 13 2019
Valid 140100Z - 141200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS
SOUTHWEST KANSAS...
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF
THE HIGH PLAINS AND OVER THE TN VALLEY AND NORTHERN GULF STATES...
...SUMMARY...
Organized severe thunderstorms, with damaging winds and hail, will
move across western Kansas into northwestern Oklahoma late this
evening. Strong storms will also be noted across the Tennessee
Valley into the northern Gulf States.
...01Z Update...
Kansas/Oklahoma: High Plains convection that developed over eastern
CO/southwest NE has propagated southeast and matured into an
organized squall line over western KS. This squall line is taking on
bow-shaped characteristics with the leading echoes now surging
southeast at roughly 40kt. Severe wind gusts, along with very large
hail, have been observed with this MCS; although, damaging winds are
now the primary threat as it races southeast. It appears the leading
edge of the squall line will approach the OK border between 03-04z.
Have adjusted higher severe probs downstream to account for this
evolution.
TN Valley/northern Gulf States: Reference:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md1731.html
VA/MD: Isolated strong storms linger across northern VA this
evening. This activity developed in the wake of an early-day remnant
MCS-debris field. While boundary-layer heating was minimized due to
clouds/precipitation, sufficient buoyancy remains in place for a few
strong storms for the next few hours.

MD 1732 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 580... FOR SOUTHWEST KS
Mesoscale Discussion 1732
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0723 PM CDT Tue Aug 13 2019
Areas affected...southwest KS
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 580...
Valid 140023Z - 140130Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 580
continues.
SUMMARY...Corridor with widespread 60-75mph gusts expected near the
bow apex for the next 0.5-2 hours.
DISCUSSION...Radar mosaic/10km CAPPI shows a mature bow moving to
the south-southeast between 35-40kt with a few more intense cores
located near the apex of the bow. Instrument-measured observations
during the past hour have sampled gusts generally in the 60-75mph
range. The 00z Dodge City raob showed weak flow in the lowest 6km
but veering with height resulting in around 25kt effective shear.
However, steep 0-3km lapse rates (8 degrees C/km) and the mature bow
with a well-defined rear-inflow jet, will probably result in a
continued risk for widespread severe gusts ranging in the 60-75mph
range near the apex of the bow. The bow will move towards the Dodge
City vicinity during the next 1-1.5 hours prior to 9pm CDT.

MD 1731 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 579... FOR EASTERN ARKANSAS...NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI...NORTHERN ALABAMA...NORTHERN GEORGIA...AND THE SOUTHERN HALF OF TENNESSEE
Mesoscale Discussion 1731
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0655 PM CDT Tue Aug 13 2019
Areas affected...eastern Arkansas...northern Mississippi...northern
Alabama...northern Georgia...and the southern half of Tennessee
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 579...
Valid 132355Z - 140100Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 579
continues.
SUMMARY...An isolated severe threat will gradually shift southward
across the discussion area through the early evening. The
probability of a new Severe Thunderstorm Watch issuance for portions
of the discussion area is 20%.
DISCUSSION...Scattered clusters of storms continue to persist across
the remaining valid portions of WW 579, with other marginally severe
convection in eastern Arkansas. More recently, scattered storms
have begun to develop across western Tennessee between these two
clusters of storms along a slowly southward-moving front across the
area. These storms are in a weakly sheared, yet strongly unstable
environment, which should continue to support isolated instances of
gusty winds and marginally severe hail. Storms have drifted
southward across the discussion area and should continue to do so
through slightly after dusk, when nocturnal boundary layer cooling
results in a decrease in overall updraft intensity. Furthermore,
western Tennessee convection may continue to expand and grow upscale
with time, posing a wind/hail risk into northern Mississippi over
the next couple hours. On the whole, these convective trends will
probably not necessitate a new WW issuance.
