SPC Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook
Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0212 AM CDT Fri May 24 2024
Valid 251200Z - 261200Z
...EXTREMELY CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR GUADALUPE MOUNTAINS AND
LINCOLN NATIONAL FORREST REGION...
...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHERN HIGH
PLAINS...
...Synopsis...
Increasing mid-level flow is expected Saturday afternoon within the
base of a large-scale trough traversing the Rockies and Southern
Plains. This will promote a deepening lee cyclone over the central
High Plains, with a dryline extending southward. Behind this
dryline, a deeply mixed air mass is expected. Increasing momentum
transfer from aloft and a tightening surface pressure gradient will
yield widespread 20 to 25+ mph sustained west/southwesterly winds.
In addition, widespread single-digit to lower-teens RH will combine
with this surface flow favoring an expansive Critical fire area.
Moreover, sustained wind speeds greater than 25 mph are expected in
the Guadalupe Mountains and northward into the Lincoln National
Forrest. An Extreme area has been introduced here, where ERC
continues to climb above the 80-90th percentile.

MD 0922 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 298... FOR SOUTH-CENTRAL OKLAHOMA INTO NORTHEASTERN TEXAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0922
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1244 AM CDT Fri May 24 2024
Areas affected...south-central Oklahoma into northeastern Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 298...
Valid 240544Z - 240715Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 298
continues.
SUMMARY...Local risk for very large hail and/or strong/damaging
winds continues.
DISCUSSION...A couple of clusters of storms -- one over
south-central Oklahoma and a separate one over southeastern Oklahoma
and into northeastern Texas -- continue at this hour. Storms have
maintained intensity, with a supercell now near the Fannin/Hunt
County Line in Texas having turned strongly to the right over the
past hour or so. This storm is likely producing very large hail --
potentially in excess of 2" in diameter -- at this time, and will
near the southern bounds of the WW in the next hour or so. Local
extension of the watch in area, south/southeast of this storm, may
be needed.
Elsewhere, the storm cluster over southeastern Oklahoma has also
maintained intensity, with a 73 MPH gust recently measured in
Stephens County OK. With an amply moist/unstable airmass downstream
from this convection, expect the storms -- and attendant severe
potential -- to continue over the next couple of hours.

SPC Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook
Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0151 AM CDT Fri May 24 2024
Valid 241200Z - 251200Z
...Synopsis...
An upper-level shortwave trough will continue to dig down the
Pacific coast today, and start to move inland near central CA and
into the Great Basin this afternoon. A deepening surface cyclone
will accompany this feature, and a tightening pressure gradient is
expected from southern CA through northern NV. As a result, breezy
southwest sustained surface winds will combine with low RH and
increasingly receptive fuels across extreme southeastern NV and far
western/northwestern AZ. The Elevated area has been extended
westward to include the aforementioned region. Further east across
southern AZ and western NM, low RH will remain common albeit with
lower wind speeds.
