Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely Isolated large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible SUMMARY...A band of thunderstorms is forecast to intensify across Illinois and move east into portions of central and southern Indiana during the evening. Valid 270236Z - 270330Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 324 continues. SUMMARY...A well-developed bow echo will approach the Louisville metro in the next hour. Significant damaging winds (75+ mph) are possible along with QLCS tornadoes. DISCUSSION...The ongoing MCS over portions of the lower OH Valley has continued to intensify this evening. The northern most segment of the line has shown indications of a surging rear-inflow jet across southwestern IN. Observed 70-80 kt velocities at 2-3km ARL on the KVWX VAD lend high confidence to significant damaging wind potential with the apex of this bow over the next 1-2 hours. Experimental WOFS guidance also lends high confidence to strong damaging wind potential with this feature. With an estimated forward speed of 45-50 kt, damaging winds (some 75+ mph) will approach the Louisville metro and southern IN within the next hour. DISCUSSION...A long-lived QLCS with a history of producing some wind damage continues to move northeastward late this evening. Downstream instability continues to diminish with the loss of diurnal heating, but given the rather well-organized nature of the QLCS, some damaging-wind threat may persist downstream, as it moves through a relatively moist environment where rather strong heating occurred earlier today. Weakening deep-layer flow/shear with eastward extent and increasing MLCINH should eventually result in a definitive weakening trend later tonight. SUMMARY...The damaging-wind threat will continue in the short term, before an anticipated weakening trend late tonight. DISCUSSION...Some intensification of ongoing convection has recently been noted across central NC, with an east-southeastward moving storm cluster now overtaking a strong discrete cell that had developed ahead of the line. Some damaging-wind threat may persist in the short term ahead of this cluster, as it moves into a region where rather strong heating/mixing occurred earlier today. Only modest deep-layer shear and weak low-level flow were noted on the 00Z GSO sounding, though some increase in low-level flow has recently been noted on the KRAX VWP, and stronger midlevel flow to the southwest may begin impinging upon the ongoing storm cluster. Gradually increasing downstream MLCINH should eventually result in a weakening trend later tonight, such as what has already occurred across southern VA.
