MD 1367 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 445... FOR PARTS OF CENTRAL/EASTERN NE INTO SOUTHEAST SD...NORTHWEST IA...AND SOUTHWEST MN
Mesoscale Discussion 1367
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0618 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Parts of central/eastern NE into southeast
SD...northwest IA...and southwest MN
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 445...
Valid 212318Z - 220045Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 445
continues.
SUMMARY...A loosely organized cluster of thunderstorms in
central/northeast Nebraska may pose an isolated threat for severe
wind in the short term. Other strong to severe thunderstorms in and
near Severe Thunderstorm Watch 445 should have some hail/wind threat
as well.
DISCUSSION...Loosely organized convection is ongoing early this
evening across central into northeast NE. Although this activity is
occurring in a favorable thermodynamic and kinematic environment
along/near a surface front, it has struggled to
intensify/consolidate thus far. There still appears to be some
chance for this cluster to become more organized this evening as a
modest south-southwesterly low-level jet gradually strengthens over
the central Plains and mid MO Valley. If further strengthening of
this activity can occur, then severe/damaging winds up to 60-70 mph
would likely be the main threat as these thunderstorms spread
generally east-northeastward this evening. Other, more cellular
thunderstorms are ongoing across southeast SD to the north of the
front. Isolated hail and strong to locally severe winds may occur
with this convection as well. The tornado threat remains less clear
owing to messy storm modes. Still, some increase in low-level shear
is anticipated this evening, and any persistent supercell along/near
the surface front could pose some threat for a tornado.

MD 1368 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 442... FOR WESTERN INTO CENTRAL MONTANA
Mesoscale Discussion 1368
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0627 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Western into central Montana
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 442...
Valid 212327Z - 220100Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 442
continues.
SUMMARY...The strongest convection will continue southeastward this
evening. Additional development may occur. Large hail and isolated
severe winds are the main hazards.
DISCUSSION...A few widely scattered supercells are moving slowly
southeastward into parts of central Montana. This motion is
generally expected to continue into the evening, as this is where
the moisture axis is situated. However, some early convection has
left some outflow (cooler/modestly drier) that is evident in surface
observations. It is unclear how this will impact the ongoing
strong/severe storms as they encounter this mesoscale environment.
Additional storms may develop within the terrain or perhaps along
the southern edge of the outflow. It also appears possible that a
storm or two could move southeastward out of Alberta. In general,
large hail (conditionally up to 2 inches with a mature supercell)
and isolated strong/severe gusts are the main threats into the
evening.

MD 1365 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 441... FOR SOUTHEASTERN UTAH AND FAR WESTERN COLORADO
Mesoscale Discussion 1365
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0531 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Southeastern Utah and far western Colorado
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 441...
Valid 212231Z - 220000Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 441
continues.
SUMMARY...Large to very-large hail and isolated strong/severe winds
are most likely in parts of southeast Utah and adjacent western
Colorado.
DISCUSSION...Though the mid-level trough is continuing to lose
amplitude with time, strong mid-level winds should continue to
persist in the eastern Great Basin. At present, the most undisturbed
airmass is roughly within southeastern Utah into adjacent far
western Colorado. A supercell in San Juan County remains the
strongest storm in the area and will be most capable of producing 2+
inch hail in the short term. Other storms in the Emery/Grand
Counties vicinity may intensify and pose a threat for large hail as
well. As storms move farther into the western slope, buoyancy will
be decreased and storm intensity should wane. Elsewhere in WW 441,
cloud cover/outflow has had some impact and storms have not been as
intense in the last hour. However, isolated large hail and
strong/severe winds could occur if any of that peripheral activity
intensifies.

MD 1366 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 443... FOR PARTS OF FAR EASTERN WY...NORTHEAST CO...AND THE NE PANHANDLE
Mesoscale Discussion 1366
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0540 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Parts of far eastern WY...northeast CO...and the NE
Panhandle
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 443...
Valid 212240Z - 220015Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 443
continues.
SUMMARY...The greatest threat for large hail, severe/damaging winds,
and perhaps a tornado should spread eastward this evening over the
Nebraska Panhandle and northeast Colorado.
DISCUSSION...Weak low-level upslope flow is aiding widely spaced
supercells across far eastern WY into northeast CO and the western
NE Panhandle early this evening. Surface dewpoints and low-level
moisture increase with eastward extent across these areas based on
latest observations, with greater instability also being estimated
by recent mesoanalysis. Strong deep-layer shear should continue to
support a supercell mode in the short term, with large to isolated
very large hail around 1.5-2.5 inches in diameter possible.
Severe/damaging downdraft winds around 60-70 mph may also occur,
especially where low-level lapse rates have become steepened with
daytime heating. The southern supercell in northeast CO is the
strongest storm across this region at the moment. It should have
access to an unimpeded low-level moisture feed, and will likely
maintain its intensity in the short term. A brief tornado may also
occur this evening, particularly if supercells can be maintained
farther east into the NE Panhandle where greater low-level
moisture/lower LCLs are present. Based on latest observational
trends, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 443 has been locally extended in
area to include more of the western NE Panhandle and northeast CO.

MD 1363 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA
Mesoscale Discussion 1363
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0453 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Southeastern Arizona
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 212153Z - 212330Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Isolated to widely scattered strong to severe winds are
possible in parts of southeastern Arizona.
DISCUSSION...A tropical moisture plume within the Southwest (PWAT
values greater than 1 in. per GPS TPW in southeast Arizona)
continues to foster isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms.
Shear is relatively weak per regional VAD data, and strong heating
has been somewhat muted by high-level cloud cover. Even so,
temperature-dewpoint spreads are sufficient to support a few strong
to severe wind gusts. With higher than average moisture content,
enough storm coverage may exist for a cluster to two to develop.
Should this occur, a locally greater wind threat would exist with
those clusters. Storm coverage into the western portions of the
Phoenix metro is fairly uncertain, but outflow could try and push
westward into a much more well-mixed boundary layer (temperatures in
excess of 110 F) and produce strong winds.

MD 1364 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 445... FOR PARTS OF NORTHERN IA AND SOUTHERN MN
Mesoscale Discussion 1364
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0458 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Parts of northern IA and southern MN
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 445...
Valid 212158Z - 212330Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 445
continues.
SUMMARY...Trends are being monitored for possible downstream watch
issuance in northern Iowa and perhaps far southern Minnesota. At
least isolated severe hail/damaging winds and a couple tornadoes all
appear possible.
DISCUSSION...A supercell which has recently exhibited some low-level
rotation is ongoing across northwest IA, generally along/near a
surface front. Other strong to severe convection is ongoing farther
east across northern IA along this boundary. This activity is likely
being aided by modest warm advection associated with a weak
southwesterly low-level jet over the central Plains and mid MO
Valley. Although mid-level flow is not overly strong per recent
mesoanalysis estimates, sufficient veering/strengthening of the
winds through mid levels (in recent VWPs from KFSD) is supporting
around 30-45 kt of deep-layer shear. A mix of multicells and
supercells will remain possible as convection spreads slowly
eastward along/near the front across northern IA over the next
several hours. At least isolated severe hail around 1-2 inches in
diameter and damaging winds generally 55-70 mph should be the main
threats with this activity in the short term. The threat for severe
winds may increase this evening if a small bowing cluster can
consolidate along the front. Low-level shear/winds remain somewhat
weak at the moment, but a couple of tornadoes may still occur with
any sustained, surface-based supercell. Observational trends will be
closely monitored for possible downstream watch issuance into
northern IA and vicinity.

MD 1362 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 444... FOR CONNECTICUT...MASSACHUSETTS...RHODE ISLAND
Mesoscale Discussion 1362
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0445 PM CDT Fri Jun 21 2024
Areas affected...Connecticut...Massachusetts...Rhode Island
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 444...
Valid 212145Z - 212315Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 444
continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across Severe Thunderstorm
Watch 444. Damaging gusts are the main threat, though an instance or
two of hail cannot be ruled out.
DISCUSSION...A loosely organized MCS, with a history of at least a
few damaging gusts, persists across portions of New England. An
instance of 1 inch diameter hail was also recently reported.
Mesoanalysis trends depict low-level (0-3 km) lapse rates decreasing
with eastward extent, and from 8 to 6 C/km overall over the past
couple of hours. As such, the severe threat may have already peaked
in intensity. Nonetheless, a cold pool appears to be driving ongoing
convection, suggesting that at least a couple more damaging gusts
and perhaps an instance of hail remain possible over the next few
hours.
