Document Size Limits and File Restrictions

Single Upload - When uploading one file at a time, the document can be no more than 10 MB.

Multiple Upload - The total combined size of all the documents cannot be more than 10 MB.

Filenames must be unique and be 50 characters or less.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do not upload any locked or password-protected files. The system will reject these files. We can only process unprotected files.

Computer Users

Only the following document types are accepted (no Word documents):

JPG

PNG

TIF

GIF

PDF

Smartphone and Tablet Users

If your mobile phone photos are larger than 5 MB, you should lower your phone's resolution to 3 MB or below. Instructions to do this can be different depending on your phone. Please refer to your user guide to adjust your phone settings.

PDF Files*

PDF files are permitted for upload, however you may need to complete an additional step when uploading. When you Browse or Choose File to upload, your system most likely defaults to only JPG, PNG, TIF, etc., type files. If so, you will need to select the option to allow all types of files before you can upload a PDF.

— MAC Users —

Firefox, Chrome, Safari*

Once you've selected Browse or Choose File from the Upload Center, a screen appears with a list of your computer documents. If your PDF files are not able to be selected (they are greyed out):

Click Options in the lower right hand corner of the screen. The Format drop-down should appear.

Change the selection to All Files.

Choose the PDF file you want to upload.

Once you are back to your FEMA account, click ,Upload Now or Add Another File.

* Safari Users: At this time, there is no known way to override the type of files to upload. You will either need to change your PDF file to another format, use a different browser, or mail or fax your documents.

— Windows Users —

IE (Internet Explorer), Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome

Once you've selected Browse or Choose File from the Upload Center, a screen appears with a list of your computer documents. If you do not see PDF files in your list, look for the drop-down (located under the files, on the right side of the screen).

The drop-down will display one of the following options depending on your browser: Custom Files (*.gif,*.jpeg,*jpg,..), All Supported Types, etc.

Click on the drop-down and change the choice to All Files. Your PDF files should appear.
